You failed to mention genetic factors.

Some people can't achieve a six pack no matter how hard they try. Some have a 4 pack...some the appearance of an 8 pack. All in the genes baby.

Are you kidding me? I can name professional body builders who never achieved "the six pack". Yes they have rock hard abdominals, but they don't have the typical six pack definition. Our bodies are unique. Just like some people have a six pack that isn't very symmetrical.

I personally know several guys who are down to 8% body fat...guess what? Neither of them have a six pack. Their abdominal muscles simply aren't shaped like that.

Some of you guys really need to do your research.

Genetics can influence how and where you hold fat. I grew up with a kid who kindly could be called chubby. He had ab definition. The only place on his body that wasn't fat was the mid section. It's no different then vascularity. You'll see women with arm viens that really stand out. Yet the woman isn't exactly lean.

If you guys are arguing if everybody has the same looking abdominal muscle I don't know why you think the rectus abdominus is any more uniform then other parts of your body.

Exactly. And for some people a six pack is never achieved because of the way their abdominal muscles are situated.

This forum is full of marsupialed, fat apes.

Seacrest out.

What works for me (and I am almost there but, just need to lose that last bit) is to eat lots of protein and cut out white carbs (with lots of working out to)

I thought I'd never be able to have a six pack since I was a blubbery 31-year old. I bought the Men's Health Belly-Off diet book, and it worked for me. Some key pointers:
  • Try to cook your own food. The process of preparation helps make food less "easy" and you eat a bit less
  • Definitely cut out most of those white carbs, processed foods. Go for whole grains if you're carbing it
  • If choosing between two items at the supermarket, go with the one with fewer ingredients
  • Work out five times a week
  • Every morning (even off days) do some strething or at least some light activity to get your metabolism pumping
  • Take a picture of your gut at the beginning as motivation

Genetics are definitely a factor, but they don't make it impossible. If genetics are not on your side, you just have to push that much harder

Well, most of this is common sense. I've been on a never-ending quest to find some academic text or process detailing the quest for fat loss (while maintaining as much muscle as possible) involving discussion of macronutrient composition in a diet while explaining in detail hormonal activity and explaining to "washed up meatheads" why achieving gluconeogenesis is not the only key and to be honest, wont work. what ive learned in my own quest for knowledge is that you should eat for what you're doing. Cardio? mostly carb. Weight training? a mix of carb, protein, and fat. If you want to maximize results, you should examine your training methods and decrease macronutrients accordingly (by small amounts of course) what i just said is a really generalized statement. take it with a glass of saltwater

Cool The Kid, Lando was talking about Boyer Coe, a monster Mr. O competitor who had a thick abdominal sheath that prevented the visibility of his "6 pack" even at sub 5% bodyfat.

This muscle group is actually what holds the gut in and is worked the most by the various planks. Planks alone will tighten your gut in a few weeks if you have really weak abdominal muscles. Planks don't burn the fat, though. Only a calorie deficit does that.

Ab muscles are positioned the same in almost all disease free, physically able people. Significant variance in abdominal muscle placement would make that person very prone to hernias. Genetics primarily determines fat distribution, which determines ab visibility.
