They were douchebags at my school as well. I think it is a nationwide requirement. Anyway, my fraternity was founded at 'Bama, but the original chapter was shut down there for running a state wide cocaine ring. I don't know if a chapter ever reopened, but it was still closed down when I was in school.

Ha! That's hilarious.

Let it be known that the hottest sorority to ever exist (KKG-- Kappa Kappa Gamma) began at the school I went to straight out of HS. And my God were the ladies good lookin. I remember them all wearing shirts that said "If you're dating a KKG raise your cup, if you're not, raise your standards." I loved those bitchez.

I have a close friend who is about 15 years older than me. He was a Delta Chi at the local university, and he's remained active in helping them. Like, their chapter house was condemned so the city could confiscate it, er, do some urban planning, so he helped orchestrate a good payment from the city, buy and renovate the new chapter house, etc. Whenever I visit back home, he always takes me to the frat house at least once, so he can smoke their weed. It's sort of funny.

True, but I always look at rush as a two way street. One of the reasons that the best houses are the best is because they attract the best pledges. If they want you they will put in effort starting with throwing parties, BBQs, events with hot sorority girls, etc to actually talking to you and getting to know you when you come by for rush, to inviting you out to off campus parties with kegs and strippers.

Its like employers. Yes, the best employers have applicants lining up at the door, but they also know that the most desirable applicants have multiple offers and if they want you they will put in effort to woo you.

I dont know the intricacies of the Bama system, but I would think that bigger greek system and a number of houses would make for a more competitive system, as with anything else.

Oh yeah, in that sense it definitely is a two-way street. The competition for best rush events and such is huge. But no one is going to hug your nuts at a rush event. You're expected to demonstrate your interest and make some friends. The 80/20 doctrine is pretty much true.
For chapters, reputation is what you get for free. If you have a **** reputation you have to work that much harder. At Bama and other schools with a very large and very strong Greek system, there is so much hype that even chapters just coming off probation, etc., get very large classes. The "best" houses, of course, have to work hard to stay that way. But even the worst house at Bama does not have to work very hard to get enough pledges.

Hahaha, no they have not. In case you're wondering, they're back at Bama (but from what I heard through the grapevine still very much under scrutiny from national and alumni).

We were also kicked out when somebody got drunk and decided to shoot beer bottles out of the hands of people at the house next door. I think it was only for five years, but I was gone before reinstatement.

You still haven't clarified whether the $3,500 dues are purely membership dues or if they include residence at the fraternity house, with or without meals. I thought the dues were standardized by and paid to the National, but I could be mistaken about that. As purely membership dues, the $3,500 figures seems outrageous; if it includes room, then its probably not too out of line; if it includes room and board, then it strikes me as a pretty good deal.

Greeks here are about 70% of the student body. The houses are huge and the $3,500 could be you staying there and meals, all the parties(which is a ton), but still i would say $2,000 to $2,500 just for membership.

I am going through the same problem at the moment. I transferred from another school, I am older then my potential pledge class would be. I really wouldn't like to be talked down to or even hazed by an 18 year old!!! I think I can still enjoy college life without joining the FRATS!
