Another franchise I want to mention but not sure what it defines and the first movie was released in 1979 is the Mad Max series.

Overall I'd say Wallstreet, but The Goonies was 80s cheese at its finest too. "That's what i said, booby traps!"

Yeah, I can't really think of anything that I liked back then that's aged well. Blues Brothers, maybe. Too bad Animal House was '78.

Did it help define the 80's? No, not really, but it's a hell of a good film.

Has Terminator really not been mentioned? Also Tootsie was a big one and it seems to enjoy a great critical reputation as it's aged. And Alien, too.

Some zeitgeisty movies from the 80's that weren't so iconic of the era but really remind of of that time are Brazil, Blue Velvet and Blade Runner.
