It's more politically correct to say Central European.

But then, you know that.

Thanks guys for all the comments. I am glad you can find this of some use.

BTW. Its very easy for us at these forums to make fun of US made shoes compared to European ones but this fit and construction guide was provided by the sales staff of US company Florsheim!

Take a second or two to think about that.... Today, even staff at John Lobb RTW would be hard pressed to compete against this fitting manual.

Personally, I loved the idea of the tanners traveling from pub to pub to collect urine for their tanneries. Did their carts have urinals, or did the patrons simply piss into barrels when the trucks pulled up?

Seriously, this and the articles you provided will supplement my copy of Henry Karg's Shoe Repairing, 1975, Shoe Service Institute of America; Mr Karg taught at Benson Poly here in Portland, OR, and some of the folks at Oregon Leather Co. had his classes; amusingly, at least to me, I picked up the book, used, in Chicago, having no clue until after I'd bought it that there was such a connection. Again, thank you for this info, I had no idea how broad the venue of this forum was upon joining yesterday. I have some leather I bought for boots a number of years ago which may not thank you, as I may actually dare to utilize it instead of store it; it has enjoyed taunting me for far too long, boots, boots, they still have a place in it's future... it boots ill for it.

Then you would have loved the Roman system of putting pisspots in the front of their houses for passersby.. nothing gets clothes cleaner than urine.

I like how Vespasian taxed urine used for that purpose... which is why public urinals were called vespasiennes in France for centuries.

I guess when you raise taxes, you have to be careful about what it means for your legacy.

Tangentially related, I love that some churches in Europe still have public, open-air urinals on the side of the building.
