I really liked Sideways as well, and although I didn't see many movies this past year, it was my favorite.
Fabienne touched on something that for me highlights Giamatti's brilliance, and that is the way the lead character is hysterically funny and depressing at the same time. I thought the movie was well acted virtually all the way around.
I think they parodied wine country and conoisseurs just enough to keep it lighthearted, yet retain believability.
