Yeah, I've never had a custom knife or even a high-end commercial knife. I stick to Kershaws, Gerbers, Bucks, etc. That way if I chip the blade or drop it and the point breaks on a rock, I'm not out a thousand dollars.

One of these as my everyday utility knife (the composite is not nearly as pronounced in real life, the two steels are actually very similar in colour and the knife doesn't look quite as silly as this Photochop picture)

And one of these guys as my hiking/camping blade (fantastic little blade that is sharp as hell)

I carry around a Kershaw Tyrade G-10, and often get weird looks or questions when I pull it out. How do you answer when they ask you "Why do you carry around a knife?"

For now, I've just been telling them "To cut things."

It is pretty cool - I started reading up on it when we got the boat, but suspect I'll never do much with it unless I leave the family and sail for the Bahamas or something.

The marlin spike is very cool to read about. Imagine how many lives such a tool has saved in all of history. Granted I may never have a legit use for one unless I ever get a sail boat, but they're cool, regardless. Not only for splicing rope but also an "oh ****" tool to get you out of jam at sea when you need to quickly untie a knot. I wish I opted to get my Boye knife with one.

I've been reading my knot book a lot and practicing. Mainly dock lines. Nothing like having a new or familiar guest roll up to the pier and confidently securing his (or hers) vessel with a trusting nod of their approval

anyway I'm going to post my new toys soon. a few knives and some cool stuff from CountyComm.
