I would bet Tony gets more business in the USA as of now.

To someone from England/London, I can see why Japan might considered well-dressed. I'm not sure I would say they have the most style. I don't know what "class" means.

There really isn't any reason to question Tony's motives.

I have seen him 3 times here in Tokyo. The other people who were ordering shoes at the time were extremely well dressed, almost to the point of costume.
I know I put a bit of extra care into what I was wearing. I suspect, but cannot prove that the type of person who orders from Tony in Japan might be more of a connoisseur and clothes horse than the person who orders from him in Europe or the US.

In Style and the Man, Flusser claimed that high housing prices in Japan make owning out of the question for most Japanese. He posited that this meant that disposable income went into clothes, rather than mortgage payments. I am not sure if I agree.

The high housing prices certianly lead to smaller homes/closet space, and the entire culture values quality over quantity, so it is understandable that Japanese men would appreciate and invest in fewer, but higher-quality clothing/shoes.

I do agree with your assessment of Tony's clientele. More guys than I would've expected show up at bespoke appointments wearing fairly standard outfits, including jeans.

Home ownership in Japan is a bit below the US and the UK, but higher than Germany. Their money clearly doesn't go to clothing. Or at least good clothing.

Isn't it true the housing price in Japan has dropped substantially from its height in late 80's or early 90's?

Class:

elegance in style: elegance in

1.appearance ---
2.behavior --- do you act with class or are you rude/crude etc.
3.lifestyle ---
