Jon.

Why, are you planning on writing your memoirs as well? The broads section will need to be either fantasy or futuristic.

I'm shocked at the no dope thing. It's going to depress sales by at least 10%. You should just make something up.

As I was still in utero when my mother fled the Japanese onslaught, there's nothing I can say about it first-hand.

As for the "no dope thing," you've got to remember that I was pushing into my mid-20s when the whole hippie-doper culture came down, and being a nice conservative, I regarded the hippie scene with total contempt. Later at parties, I did occasionally take a few social tokes. Never cared for marijuana and its effects, and so I always shunned it and, Lord knows, any harder drugs.

Also, I was largely brought up by my grandfather. He had been very active in Hollywood in the 1920s, when dope was rife there, and he just had a passionate loathing for any kind of dope. One of his best friends, Willard Huntington Wright, best known as the author of the Philo Vance murder mysteries under the pen name of "S.S. Van Dyne," became a druggie and went down to an early grave, and I think that had a very profound effect on him. His children and I always thought it a great blessing that he died early in 1963--shortly before the outbreak of the hippie-doper culture. It would surely have driven him apoplectic!

Several reasons:

Male sexuality thrives on novelty and conquest. When you have "done the do" with a woman hundreds of time, a sort of sense of "been there, done that" sets in, no matter how objectively attractive she may be.

Moreover, her good looks nothwithstanding, she is something of an old poop! She is always upset about something or too tired or whatever. I think this is pretty typical of the entire female sex. They are inherently foul-tempered and have no sense of humor.

Mostly, though--and by far the major single factor--is simply that I have gotten too damn old! These days I don't think I could rouse much enthusiasm even at the prospect of being double-teamed by, say, Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson!
