That length takes some to get used to but I think it's workable. In a sw&d context I'd pair that coat with a much bigger pair of trousers to offset the length. I'm also not sure buttoning it up helps in this case as the cut appears to be pretty loose. Bonus point if you wear it open with high rise trousers is that you can balance the silhouette even more (requires shorter tops though).

Mos Def coat looks like some good old milsurp thing. Length is about the shortest I'd go personally, cropped bottoms are great for shorter long coats like that.

@robinsongreen68 Wasn't it you though who posted a WAYWRN picture recently with a fairly long coat on?

Notwithstanding the gargantuan padded Balenciaga coat I posted in my last post ITT, on the whole I think the safest way of not looking swamped in very long coats is that they fit slim, or anyway not loosely, around the chest and waist. This guy for example:

https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/fall-2017-menswear/balenciaga/slideshow/collection#1

does not look swamped at all, even though that coat almost reaches his ankles, because it fits slim from the waist down.

^ yeah it was, i actually have a few longish coats (junya, lang, schneider etc) but wanted to try something very drapey/oversized. now i think about it though, shah is the same height as me and he has a long/oversized yohji coat that looks good on him, so im sure sipang is right, it's about balancing proportions and feeling comfortable with the silhouette.

I’m 5’9 and I too, have a lot of trouble with length. Ultimately I think it’s just a matter of tolerance - longer legs naturally just mean you have more of a “sweet spot” for a good length. I’m always caught either too long or way above my knees. That perfect break is hard to find for a guy with a 29” inseam.

here's an example, really like this wooyoungmi, beautiful material and drape. but just feel the length is too much for me :-(

Maybe it's the picture, but it looks like there's a decent-sized collar gap, i.e., collar falling away from your neck, or maybe it's you were leaning forward when this picture was taken. In any event, even if coat is meant to be oversized, collar should always hug the neck, otherwise it might just be too big, but not in the oversized way that it's intended to be.

I need a loose, long black (or charcoal) wool coat, preferably not insanely expensive. What are the options? Im open for traditional makers if any fits the bill.

^^ thanks, looks cool, but unfortunately a bit too fashion forward for me (esp buttoning + lapels). Something more like Dafoe's coat on last page would probably work better.

Most (all?) of Rosen’s coats are not as long as they seem in the photos because the models are short.

That's just your regular made in Italy (Zegna, Valentino, Armani, Versace, Canali etc) big everywhere 90-00s coat. You'll have an easier time finding something like that on ebay than among current offerings. If you're ok with classic designs, wider shoulders and loser cuts then that's fish in a barrel stuff.
