Orthotics and Dress Shoes Fit

I have a size 11 fitting (Brannock...with normal width), but I have flat, shallow feet. To get the length I need requires getting shoes that have way too much room in the throat and shoelace area. It makes finding good quality shoes very difficult.

Many people claim to use custom orthotics to fill in the space. Actually, I wear custom orthotics in my workout/running shoes (have for years). My concern is that the added height in the heel will create an issue with fit in the heel area. For those who have worn these types of orthotics in dress shoes, have you have problems with your foot being to high in the shoe?

I would love to use orthotics as it would allow me to branch out into lots of different shoes that aren't provided in narrow.

Thoughts and feedback much appreciated.

I've found superfeet inserts to work well without mucking up the heel fit. The low profile ones anyway...

Since my original post, I've received my new orthotics (see photos below). I went with the most shallow option available, but it's still quite voluminous (as shown by the quarter in the photo). Have any of you been successful with using this type of orthotic in a traditional dress shoe? Seems like it will raise my heel way too high and create major issues. Obviously, I'll have to choose larger shoe sizes than I have normally worn. For those with these types of orthotics, how much larger is your shoe size when using these? Thanks

I haven't had success using inserts in most traditional dress shoes (though I'd be interested if anyone has). Allen Edmonds has a range of shoes with replaceable insoles, as do a number of Florsheim models. I was looking for something relatively sleek and landed on the Florsheim Hamilton penny loafers. Very happy with these + Superfeet insoles.

I've just been prescribed orthotics for a reoccuring stress injury and I'm having problems that it makes most shoes to tight across the bridge, heal too high in the cup and for those shoes I can fit them in, distorting the leather significantly around the arch and to be honest mine don't look anywhere near as high as yours.

Hopefully can come up with a solution and maybe have the orthotic slimmed down a little but if not then it'll be a choice between pain or design

I wear orthotics and found that Alden Shoes. I use my orthotics in my Cape Cod collection penny loafers and mocs, Barrie last wingtips and a pair of trubalance alogonquin.
