Eh. Just because there are examples in the comics doesn't make it a good thing.

I also feel like they went over the top with the tattoos. Having a chain mail design in ink covering his exposed arm is a bit much.

Well that is not the point though, the point was they've been doing that type of trident for years/decades from it's source (comics). You asked and I simply answered why it has more than 3 tips.
