I ended up getting the double monks. I found them a bit big, was going to return them but then saw itd cost 120 usd so decided to keep em! I’m enjoying them, just wish they were a tad more snug! I get some heel slippage and have to tighten the straps as much as possible. Also they look a bit clownish from some angles lol

Nice shoes, maybe a pair of slim leather insoles can help. I am usually 10.5UK, but in some lasts have to choose 11 UK and use slim insoles; what I can't explain is once the shoes are broken in I don't need the insoles.

I photographed my small (compared to most of you folks!) boot collection so I could keep better track of them. It’s interesting to see how some of them have aged.

The Grassmere Brown Zug Grain was my first ever Goodyear welted boot, I bought them in 2012. They have held up incredibly well, and I think I’m going to resole them soon and add a natural welt, which I think will work well with how reddish the leather has become over the years.

My next pair of Tricker’s were these monkey boots made for Nitty Gritty. These are probably my second most worn boots of all time. I just love them. Like the Grassmeres the commando sole just keeps going, it’s very hard and durable.

Then in 2015 I bought another monkey boot collab with Nitty Gritty, in suede but with smooth leather for the tongue and heel. This is why I fell in love with brass eyelets and more natural welts.

This month I started buying Tricker’s again and picked up the Lawrence in Cubana suede and M7527 in navy scotch grain (which I‘ve already posted about), and will probably order another pair or two soon. But then I need to stop so I can actually have the time to break them in and enjoy them. The Lawrence needs very little break-in as it has a gumlite sole and the leather is already soft, but the M7527 is fairly stiff, and I think I’m going to get the Henry in peanut reverse suede next which I expect will also need some proper time to break.

It’s been enjoyable reading the past 50 or so pages of posts here. Thanks everyone for inspiring me to spend more money on boots that I definitely don’t need yet will still bring me quite a bit of joy!

Love them all, but especially those last monkey boots. I have a pair I bought on sale that’s the same suede but with a wedge sole. I really should wear them more often as they still need breaking in and I think they’d probably look a lot better with some age on them.

Thanks so much! Oh with the wedge sole they’d probably be really comfortable, you should definitely work on breaking them in! Would love to see a photo of them.

Great to see pics of boots that have had some serious wear. Those Grasmeres in particular look really good. I understand what you are saying about getting them re-welted with a natural welt, but that will be a fairly expensive exercise and I think it will be hard to improve on how they look at the moment.

Thanks! Yeah I’ve put a lot of wear into these, I’m amazed at how good the Grassmeres look with what they’ve been through. The monkey boots have gotten a ton of good use and quite a bit of travel as well, but mostly city use.

The Grassmeres have been hiking and tromping around the countryside, but also have been my main winter city boot in Stockholm, Sweden. The sidewalks are usually covered in small gravel in the winter to increase traction on the icy walkways, and that gravel has really eaten away at the lugs over the years. They’ve still got some life in them but I’ll want new soles in the next year or two, and after over ten years I’m willing to put some money into upgrading the look a little during a resole. These boots are worth more to me than a new pair would, so a couple hundreds bucks to prep them for the next ten years sounds reasonable.

I’m also working on resoling a pair of Red Wing Beckmans myself at home, and if that goes well then I’d do these Grassmeres myself. If it doesn’t go well then I’ll give up that idea. 😂

Sounds like you’ve been using the Grasmeres exactly as they were intended to be used!
