I have beaten this watch for 25 years. It has been covered with paint. Rock climbing etc. I have worn it playing ice hockey and roller hockey. I have hit it with rapid gates skiing at 55mph in SG also used it as a blocker in slalom. It has never lost a beat. It has been serviced once.

Rolex Explorer II (if you don't dive don't worry about depth rating)
Omega Seamaster 300m
Omega Planet Ocean
IWC Ingenieur
IWC Aquatimer
JLC Compressor Dive GMT (may still be over $5k used)
Panerai

go for the rolex yachtmaster. should be able to get a used one for around 5K. Great tool watch, but not nearly as common as the submariner. Or a Panerai is always a fun beat around watch.

Personally, i went with the rolex GMT IIc. Love it.

Any other suggestions? comments on my selections?
I have never understood why people would want a luxury watch as a "beater", but to each their own.
What kind of use will the watch need to endure?
You seem to have a fairly specific aesthetic in mind (given the suggestions you reject here) but what are your parameters, in terms of features, materials, colors, size, etc?
Perhaps browse this list for further ideas.

Gold case for a beater? Why?
I would think high-quality stainless, tegimented steel, bead-blasted n-f, etc.
Perhaps even less "luxury" and more "quality tool" such as a Sinn U1000, Damasko DC66 Si Black, etc.

Good basic list, as most of the other suggestions here are (although using a Rolex as a blocker in slalom...hmmm...).

Listen, you'll have to excuse me. I have a lunch meeting with Cliff Huxtable at the Four Seasons in 20 minutes.

Psh. You put up a watch on eBay that survived a shotgun blast with the video and birdshot dings to prove it, still keeping COSC time, and it'll sell. Hell I'LL buy it.
