Selvage, in its revived form, has been around for 20 years now. It's hardly the 'latest thing' that a bunch of big brands are attempting to exploit.
I don't disagree that it's been around. But whether the mall brands are pushing it as a marketing tool - it comes in and out as something to exploit.
