Is it possible to wear successfully a SC and vest without a tie?

imho, you wear the vest without a tie for a real casual look, or you wear a sport coat with a tie and no vest.

I don't think the combination of a vest with a sport coat and alternating color trousers is going to look very good.

A heavier sport coat should keep you warm enough as it is.

Ugh please don't. Vest without a tie just SCREAMS douchebag who saw the look in an Express ad.

Wear a heavier jacket or substitute the waistcoat for a sweater

With a tweed jacket, if a plain or simple design - Fair Isle vest sweater

Don't deny your inner douche. You know should cater to your audience. Are you wearing it to meet women or to sip brandy with other men?

Cardigans are nice as an alternative, if its really casual.. otherwise V-neck sweaters are good

Otherwise if you must one look that may work (but a bit of a stretch) is Solid/Pinstripe Navy SC with a White/Ligh Blue Oxford Shirt and a Herringbone Vest. Dark Blue Jeans or matching pants are the only thing that will pull this correctly.

With a waistcoat, never. With a sweater vest or cardigan (as previously stated), yes, provided that you mind the proportions. The nice thing about vests is that it can beef up a slender frame or provide a slimming effect on a rounder, heavier frame, provided that the overall appearance is neither stiff or sloppy. A happy inbetween is what you would strive for.

How important is full vs half canvas to you for heavier sport jackets?
