Instant hot water tap

Does anybody have one of those special taps that provides "on demand" boiling water?

If so, do you like it? Not?

Any recommendations with respect to make/model and where to locate in your kitchen?

I think it is a really bad idea.... I had really bad 2nd degree burns after accidentally putting my hands under something like that when I was a kid

That is a concern (I have two children) -- how old were you when this happened?

We had one in the old house and I liked it a lot -- more than I expected. Very convenient.
That was pre-child, though. They may make them with safety handles, I don't know. I don't think the brand makes a big difference. In any event, I don't remember our brand -- something readily available from Home Depot.

I did in my house growing up. It was almost never used. In general, highly specialized kitchen appliances are a bad idea. Do you really want another faucet hanging over your sink?

My parents have one of these in their kitchen, and burns/other dangers weren't a concern growing up. So long as you take the time to explain to your children that it is potentially hazardous I don't imagine you will have any issues. It is great for boiling eggs, hot chocolate, thawing frozen meat, coffee etc etc.

My parents have a double sink and their tap is located a few inches from the primary tap approximately in the middle of the right sink. I'm unsure what brand they have, but I will make some inquiries..

I have one and use it everyday. It reduces cooking time, no waiting for water to boil.. but the best part, instant french press coffee, tea, etc.

My experience with them is that they can give off a slight oder over time so we stopped using it and eventually had it removed.

Our water is double filtered, and we have the instant hot - it's great.

I was around 12.... It wasn't actually a specialized hot water faucet. Just a regular sink faucet that gave off incredibly hot water when in the "hot" position. I didn't realize this, and the water was so hot that my nerves must have been shocked initially so that I had my hands there for 1-2 seconds before I realized just how hot it was. Sounds marsupialed, but true. Long story short, the tops of my hands were severely burnt and the skin peeled off them, which was extremely painful. I don't have any marks or anything since then, but it was painful as hell. I'd stay away, even if they claim to have safety mechanisms, especially if you have kids. Is it really worth taking even a 1% risk of something happening for the 1-2 minutes you'll save having the tap vs. an electric kettle?

I tend to agree with the child safety issue.

However, in my place in SLC there is one installed in the kitchen. I like it. I will take a look at the brand and such next time in town.

How much energy do they use? Expensive to run?

As an alternative, I have one of these...they require 2 buttons to dispense the water, so the safety is built in. Really handy, just get a big one if you use lots of hot water.

A good alternative -- will have to see if the "counter clutter" it generates is acceptable or not.
