What do you say when someone says something nice to you? Nothing at all?

To be polite and comply with general conventions I say "thanks" in such a way that the person knows to never do it again...and then I gauge what it is that they "really" want

I think the best thing to do is say "thank you".
Being put on the spot is a little akward and that's what a compliment does...no?

I like, and react well, to most compliments. However, when they are embarassingly over the top or reveal just a little too much information, or both (some one told me once that they read the forum and that it changed their life, and essentially, that now they were cool and no longer a social outcast) I feel embarassed for the person and try to deflect the topic.

Happy camper, aren't you? Isn't it better to say "Thanks" in a completely neutral way? That way, you have the control... or at least, you won't be displaying your crazy freak flag to the world.

Yes, a gentleman will always accept a compliment gracefully -- in fact, this is one of the marks of a gentleman I think. Where I can do so without compromising my integrity, I like to respond to a compliment with a compliment of my own.

I don't think I've ever given a compliment for anything that didn't deserve complimenting or gotten a compliment on anything I thought was insincere. Maybe you guys hang around sleazy people, but I'm usually flattered by the compliments I get, and they are usually from very unsuspecting people and rarely canned. I avoided a sincere compliment once as a joke, and the person was quite offended.

my friends love me for my helpful character. and when I helped a couple, the way the girl hugs and kisses me as a sign of thankfulness kills me when the boyfriend is next to us ..
