Dear Folks:

I am soon to sell a tie or two, on ebay. I've never sold or even bought one online before.

How best to ship it? In a padded envelope, say, will it arrive unsteamably wrinkled?

Please advise.

I fold mine twice, like they would do at a store. I then wrap it in tissue paper (like what they give you at a store), and tape it. I then use a large USPS Priority Mail box (the one that is about 15 x 10 inches. I've never had any complaints.

I've also had people send me ties where they fold it once more over, so that it fits in the smaller Priority Mail box. That way works fine too. I would say don't go with a padded envelope, because if the tie gets crushed, you have a crease.

I've sold a number of ties on ebay (though none recently). I always used the smallest USPS Priority Mail Box. I think you need the structure of the box and it certainly leaves a much better impression with the customer. I think I folded the ties carefully in thirds, wrapped them in tissue paper and then wrapped the whole thing in a layer of thin bubble wrap that I had on hand. I never had a single complaint. This packing was probably overkill, but it pays to be careful. Think about all the complaints you've read here about tailors just throwing a suit in a box--probably makes no difference, but I think a customer really likes to see their purchase treated as a precious object. The USPS boxes are, of course, free and the packing materials I've mentioned will probably only run around fifty or sixty cents per tie which you can add to the shipping charge. It's also my impression that buyers are always happy to pay just a little more for top-rate packing.

I fold the tie in half, then in thirds, and wrap it in some tissue paper. I use an 8 x 10" bubble mailer (or whatever that size is) and ship First Class Mail.

Only costs about $1.50 to send, plus 50 cents for the envelope (vs $4 for Priority) and arrives in a few days. I've never had a complaint from a buyer, and they like the fact that they only need to pay $2 for shipping.
