My question was rhetorical. The answer is: no, there is no reason to care. BTW, I think that sort of sport coat might look good with 2 button cuffs.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It sounds like I should just go with the tailor's advice for 2 functional buttonholes. I will also consider having just 2 buttons on each sleeve.

You should ask them to make a bespoke price tag that you can leave attached, too.

My first topcoat from A&S turned out to be a half inch shorter in the sleeve than I found comfortable. Their 2 + 2 protocol (or was it 3 + 1?) meant that fixing it was a piece of cake.

They're getting better at making sham buttonholes, too. It used to be that even in the expensive houses, there was a real difference. Now they're very often harder to spot.

Don't open the button holes first. I just feel that shortening working sleeves to be much a worse headache than lengthening them. Unless you shorten the sleeves at shoulders (not a sure attempt), the first hole may be too close to the end of cuff and it just looks weird.
