A big +1 to all the comments about being presumed arrogant, assholic, intimidating, gay, and dickish.
Then again, maybe it's because when someone compliments what I'm wearing, my stock reply is "Thanks, now get off *******, townie."
I have learned to be more comfortable toning it down, though. To actually forego the sport coat from time to time when going out was a big step for me. I've found I've been more popular since. Or, you know, as popular as a disdainful prick can ever be.

ime, the sport coat has been a death sentence if worn after 9pm. not only do I stand out like a sore thumb amongst my coworkers, but now It appears that I belong with the group of suited gents huddled in the corner smoking cigars.

You guys are lucky.

What with my astigmatism and glasses, and my shortness, I look like a nerd or rather get accused of wearing a sport coat ironically i.e. a hipster.

In fact, the other day I wore some thick black frame glasses and thought 'damn I look like foo', except without the bespoke, and other things.

I'll never forget I was told by a beautiful girl at a bar that she was happy she took a chance to talk to me because I looked so "unapproachable." At the time was wearing tortoise shells, SC (with PS), button-front, raw denim and tassels (a look I would consider rather casual/after-work-drinks friendly). She dressing so well made me intimidating. She also said her guy friends told her I had to be gay

.
I was able to seal that deal but it was a bit disconcerting how many opportunities I might have missed out on because of being over-dressed in a lot (if not most) occasions. I suppose it might be a symptom of being younger, however, so hopefully more women will appreciate the effort as I get older.
Im also younger and get this all the time! I understand how it could be harder to approach someone whos good looking/well dressed so it just means that we have to take the initiative and make the first move. Naturally girls like guys who are in better shape, take care of them selves, and are well dressed so you should rarely get turned down. . . .I have been told im a pretentious prick numerous times thou

Do any of you "unapproachable" and "pretentious" guys find that the women who do step up and approach you are generally more compatible?
