Hi. I recently commissioned a bespoke navy suit in glen check. My tailor (English) recommended dark brown semi brogues rather than black captoes (which I have). He said a glen check is historically used as a country attire rather than city, so it’s best to dress it down a bit.

He recommended the EG Cadogan in dark brown, semi brogue. Any thoughts on this? Is a loafer at all possible?

You can't go wrong with EG but I'd be cautious about relying too much on historical context versus modern-day sensibilities.

What's important is that the colours work well together and your shoes don't clash with the rest of the outfit (think navy suit + tan shoes). Dark Oak (i.e. the EG brown colour) famously varies quite a lot from pair to pair and can be quite light at times. If the shade of navy you've chosen is on the lighter side, then this could very well work harmoniously. If it's a more sombre dark navy, then I'd personally stick to black shoes.

Both are acceptable, if you already have a black captoe, the Cadogan might be a good alternative. I would also look at the EG Berkeley.

Spot-on advice from your tailor! Edward Green Cadogan in dark brown semi-brogue sounds perfect. Lo loafers could work, but for a more versatile option the brogue adds a touch of country chic that complements the glen check nicely. EG is top-notch quality, so go for it!
