Do you care about being distinctive?

I'd imagine that more people are about fitting in, or conforming to their surroundings, rather than be distinctive for the sake of distinction (at least for clothing, probably most other areas of life too).

Threads asking for self awareness from its respondents are usually distinctly devoid of such.

For me yes and no. I buy distinctive pieces which I find interesting and I buy nice basics which aren't very distinctive. It is nice when nobody has what you have but then it's also cool when you come across someone who appreciates the same things you do. Sometimes being distinctive is only in the details and sometimes I wouldn't try to be very different in a tuxedo for example. I have no idea where this is going.

Yes. Same here. I base my wardrobe sort of on 50s to 60s "cool," a la James Dean, Steve McQueen, which can be somewhat Waspish looking but it's sure not what you see in suburban America anymore.

Yeah, that's not a good look either.

Coincidentally, those men are both Hoosiers, and somehow a certain Midwestern sensibility but also rebellion comes through in their dress. Having grown up in Indiana, it's a theme that resounds strongly with me. Not to say this is restricted to Hoosiers; robbie pulls it off very well.

Hmm, yeah, I knew Dean was, didn't realize that about McQueen.

We Hoosiers keep close tabs on whom we can lay claim to because it is such a dismal state.

I thought about it and every possible answer was as ambivalent and self serving as that response was. I think almost everyone wants to be distinctive in some way or another. Distinctively unique, distinct in a signature style or color, distinct as in eye catching.... So sure I suppose I do.

62% of the forum voted somewhat distinct. This makes all of us who voted entirely indistinct.
