I've actually gotten a lot of valuable information from this thread. If I didn't like the jacket, I wouldn't have bought it. I know what I like, but there are a lot of guys on this forum who have a lot of knowledge and experience that I value. I posted this thread because I was curious what others here would have to say and I wanted to know if I got a fair deal.

While I agree that the sentiment is a nice sentiment, it is also somewhat unrealistic. At the end of the day we all strive to strike a balance between our concerns for how our appearance and actions are perceived by others and our desire to chart our own course. Few of us reach that balance and most of us struggle to not let the views of others shape us too much.

Moreover, while we tend to seek input from all, we often weigh more seriously the input of persons presumed to know better the subject or to have a true eye. While I might appreciate an enthusiastic round of applause for a performance from a friend or relative, a simple thumbs up from a peer who I respect will be far more satisfying. Just the nature of the beast.

As to the jacket, I read your OP as seeking more than just affirmation, but a sense of why the choice made was good or bad. I think you received the type of critical analysis you sought and this forum would be very dull very quickly if we responded to requests for critical input by simply saying "hey, if you like it, that is all that counts."

Exactly, lest we slide into a morass of sartorial relativism - in a nutshell, the 'cruiser-ism' of style. Usually, I disavow 'slippery slope' type arguments, but the AAAC forums provide a striking example of a rapid descent into 'anything goes, as long as you like it' brought about by 1 or 2 members. For all those who are not sure about what I'm talking about, go here. It's very long - you have been warned.

Also, is this technically a sport coat or a blazer?

You did quite well. Yes, it's a bazer.

I have four of that very model (with three patch pockets) in the same gray, royal blue, tobacco, and deep burgundy. The coat is a year round staple for me. I purchased all of them in the late 1970s and early 1980s. That particular Oxxford cloth weave is akin to most frescos. Hold the unlined back up toward a light source and you will see how the cloth is loosely woven and rather breathable. I wear the charcoal gray blazer with pale gray or marine blue or tartan trousers.

Not that it matters at all, but your buttons are different than any other Oxxford buttons I've seen. Oxxford used the variegated cap buttons with either a pewter (shown below) or bronze patina finish until they switched to the bright goldish stamped metal cap Oxxford Crest buttons and faux enamel Crest buttons. Perhaps your buttons were an interim? I certainly have not seen every Oxxford out there.

You can find Oxxford from before 1990 at thrift stores pretty easily. They are standard thrift store fare.

I wouldn't consider any cheap Oxxford finds as killer deals unless they are more recent.

That said, ~$60 for a well-made jacket, if it fits you then it's hard to say you overpaid...
