I guess I've always found the shelf behind the sofa filled with tchotchkes to be annoying, and whatever you have on the shelf will always fall over at the most inopportune time. So having one permanently attached is much worse for me.

One year, my grandpa (an architect and competent woodworker) was inspired to make one of these for each of his children's families.

A nice gesture I suppose, but not exactly convenient when you surprise them all with a large object when they are visiting on vacation from several states away....and you are the kind of person who would be insulted if someone didn't take it home and place it somewhere.

I think my parents still have it in their backyard garden. Not sure about my aunt and uncle's copy, but there was a copy on the deck of my grandparent's summer cottage when they sold it, and they may have yet another copy at their house...

hah, sounds pretty annoying. I've always wondered if they were comfortable.

I mean...you can sit in it. I am not sure that he got the size exactly right...I think he worked from seeing it in a museum/photos and so the proportions are correct, but it might be a little oversized.

The seat is a little too long...if the original were 10% smaller, it would probably be a better fit. It's ok to sit in outside and do some light reading--maybe with a drink on the nice flat arms--but I wouldn't want to get deep into a novel on it.

"Stuff" in SF - http://www.stuffsf.com

They don't really do online sales but they can send pics. They have several similar chairs in stock right now.
