And yikes man, what's with the Pharaoh Ramses/goat beard?

In London it is (I ought to know, I'm there all the time), and we've already decided that conservative business dress = international conservative business dress.

As for Manton's assertion that a 3-patch coat in a casual fabric is conservative business dress, I don't really know where to begin, except to say that this thread should probably more appropriately be called WML (What Manton Likes).

Not that there's anything wrong with that, naturally. In the "Foofing" thread, all you're getting is Foof's tastes (shoulders that fit a certain way, lapels that are a tad wider, etc.), and people wouldn't ask to be Foofed if they didn't value Foof's opinion. So, here, you're getting Manton's view on what Manton likes. If you value his opinion, then bombs away. If you're like oldog and you don't give a hell what anyone says and just want to display your threads, then bombs away.

Anyway. As for the facial hair, like the outrageous collars, I just like it. And I'm not wedded to it. I hack it off and do different **** all the time (just like I have tons of shirts with more orthodox collars).

Not really.

I get that conservative business dress varies from place to place. 3 patch is a summer standard in the US. No problem wearing it to an office. Same in Naples. Not in London. I get that.

I have however been to London many times over nearly 30 years and I have never seen a collar like yours. I don't live there and never have so maybe I just missed it. However, I do think it looks costumey in a way that three patch does not, even if it is somehow acceptable for business.

I don't think that this particualr extreme cutaway collar the way it's shown here is conservative business dress, but I do think that a wide cutaway collar with the right height, angle and particularly the right tie knot (single FIH) can be conservative business dress - maybe an aggressive conservative business dress but still conservative enough to not draw stares or comment.

I actually like cutaway collars, just not this one (too small, too extreme, wrong knot). Clearly harder to make it work than your standard spread. But in every way a better option than a narrow angle point collar that looks ugly no matter what is around it.

This collar isn't quite as extreme, though still a cutaway. Thoughts?

Isn't a cutaway collar supposed to be quite formal? Doesnt it need a more formal tie than a knit tie?

Just wondering

Thanks, but coat and tie are actually both navy in this pic. The yellow light above the mirror does distort color a bit though.

I'll be damned. But some browns anyway recently. And you've learned the PG pose quickly. I like the spread by the way. Extreme cutaway can work but it's rather difficult.

I am not any kind of conservative business dress maven, but I have been appreciating this thread and the overall effect it's had on the forum of late. I think this recent discussion (re: the cutaway collars and such) could lead to a decent addendum to the description of conservative business dress as a philosophy: if you can describe any element of your look as "extreme", "gimmicky," or "outrageous" then it is not conservative business dress.

A nice cutaway still looks as though, when viewd from head on, the angle separating the points is less than 180. Also, the points need to be a bit shorter than on a medium spread. Finally, if you can see the neck band of your tie almost halfway around your neck, the collar is too damned spread.

So given these criteria, how would you judge the one I posted?
