BTW the Hugo Boss suit is $1400. This is expensive but Herringbone was
around $1200 when we went to their store. MJ Bale 2 for $1000 looks
good but I did have a look at them in DJs and the style was a bit
old-fashioned... The good thing about the Hugo Boss was the style was
rather contemporary and distinctive. I think that is why {my fiance} is so
keen on it.

Groan... I can empathise with you. I had a conversation with a Canberra-based former colleague of mine last week. He called me to seek my advice on purchasing some suits, but although I attempted to steer him in the direction of Herringbone, MJ Bale, or RL Polo suits, he had an unaccountable fondness for Hugo Boss, too.

Whatever else one can say about Hugo Boss, there's no doubt that they're effective at marketing themselves.

Reminds me of the time Ethandesu and I were having a chat in the old Herringbone store at QVB, when along came these two geniuses who had a conversation along the following lines:

Genius A: What about this one, man (points to a 3-roll-two Osaka-cut suit)
Genius B: Nah, it's got three buttons, mate. That's not trendy anymore.
Genius A: Yeah, I know what you mean.

Ethan looked at me and rolled his eyes as our dynamic duo promptly left the store.

Been watching oldies like To Catch a Thief and Sabrina lately, and aside from ogling Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, I've been marveling at the beauty of the soft, rolled button-down collars that Bogart and Grant wore.

What do you guys think of a plain blue or white oxford with said button-down collar?

And Effortless Gent or Vovan, if you're reading this (and I mean it in the nicest way possible),,, take your anti-BD sentiments and go shove it where the sun don't shine. Mwahahahaha!

CEP, no question about it - you should get both a plain blue and plain white oxford with said collar. They're wonderful shirts to have and will only look better with wear.

Blue is more useful. Love both tho. Avoid the "modern" tiny collar however. IIRC fxh was talking about this a few pages* back. I wear then until I get holes in them cuff / collar fraying be damned. I find non BD collars tend to look sloppy when worn without at least jacket and preferably a tie.

On Hugo boss vs. MJB/Herringbone, I don't suppose he could pick exactly what he didn't like about the cut of the more reasonable options?

I've got a couple of light blue, oxford-cloth, button-down collar (OCBD) shirts, one white OCBD, and a couple of blue-and-white university stripe OCBD shirts. They are great - easy to dress up or dress down, look good with chinos or with a suit, with a knit tie, a print tie or a bow tie. Highly recommended.

Yep, and in the heat of summer with a pair of shorts and some boat shoes, lazing by the water an unironed OCBD is an excellent option.

I basically have no wardrobe as I ditched everything and went travelling for 11 months, now I get home in 6 weeks to a wedding and having to go to job interviews...

Looking for a navy and a Charcoal suit when I get back for work purposes looking to spend maybe $600-$1000 on each. Any recommendations?

Also can anyone recommend a good tailor in Melbourne?
