This is where I was heading. My last two pairs have been Ecco's and while they are ok (and better than what 90% of people seem to wear) I like the idea of having something very nice, and fixable. I don't think the Ecco construction allows that? One problem - I wear a US size 14 so its very, very hard to buy or even try anything on here. Interwebz to the rescue?!

And where do you start with a nice business shoe style? I don't mind paying for it

Haha - I'm not with one that would let me do that. Forums are surfed on and posted to from my home computer or my iPhone. I go to work to work!

Gassyndrome,

Wow, size US14 is rather large. I'm only an 8.5 so it's a little easier for me. but I have unfortunately wide and flat feet so not a lot of RTW designs accomodate my foot structure.

That being said, for a basic business shoe, have you checked out the Herring Classic Range that are made by Loake? and Loake as well?

The Herring Knightsbridge on the 026 Last: - http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/produc...colour_id=1431

or The Herring Euston on the Legend Last: - http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/produc...electedFitID=0

They have some size 13UK (Though the Euston is Out of stock for now) which may work in your case as a US to UK conversion is usually going down one size or half a size. It will depend though on the last used for the shoe and the width as well. It may differ a little depending on how your feet are built. One way of getting a rough idea of your foot width is to use a Brannock Foot measuring device (I used one in David JOnes). I found out I was a US9EE which means I can barely fit into the UK 8.5 G-fits that Herring shoes have and even then I can only size down half a size instead of a full size which apply in most US to UK size conversions. Even then I guess I was lucky to find that the Shoes on the 026 Last fit me decently. Some like the 3625 last from the Graduate Range was actually too tight for me when I put in my orthotic even if the size was 8.5G. Luckily I only paid about GBP100 for it, so it wasn't too bad, but it'll be relegated as my rainy day shoe.

There are other shoes in Herring Shoes's Classic Range, Graduate Range and Loakes with size 13 as well, you can look em up with the search tool on the right hand size when you access the front page.

In any case, good luck and I hope you manage to find one that fits.

Cheers

I take a US14E in dress shoes. This size is available in shoes on the Alden Aberdeen and Hampton lasts. It also equates to a 14D on the Barrie last which is often available in some styles on www.theshoemart.com. Many Allen Edmonds shoes are also available in 14E to order from their site. Alden is very expensive though, so most of my shoes are Loake in size UK13G. Their 1880 range is good. Take a look at www.pediwear.co.uk, www.herringshoes.co.uk, www.brogueshoes.co.uk. I have the Camden (blue suede), Bayswater (black Chelsea boot), Trapper (desert boot style with a leather sole) and Banks (brown wingtip boot). Athletic shoes are widely available in US15 (if you're a 14 in dress shoes you'll probably be a 15 in sneakers) from pretty much every large US shoe site (Zappos, Shoe Buy etc). Getting large sizes in Australia is impossible.

I think I mentioned here the story of my mate who (along with others) late last year was given a $1,000 voucher for a brand name watch by his company. I forget the brand.

He went to the Melbourne official approved store and had a look around.

He explained to the guy that the one he liked was $1500. Could he add some $ on to the voucher. Guy said "I'll see manager"

5 minutes later - without any haggling or even a polite request to lower price - guy comes back and says " If you give us $100 plus voucher its yours"

So they knocked $400 or so off $1500 without even being asked.

Says something about the outrageous markups on watches.

I pay about aud$4-$5 for mine at Taiwan night markets. They tell the time well.

Most places that sell goods for $1000+ are like this, even large stores like David Jones, Myer and Harvey Norman. I recently bought a fridge and freezer that I got reduced down by nearly $1k after telling them (Harvey Norman) I would be paying cash, in fact the usual response to "how much is this" is "I can do that one for you at x - y%" at white goods retailers. The 'regular price' is the price we are paying in order for those interest free loan/purchase terms to be offered. Damn socialists. It's not just large goods either, I've had electric blankets, computers (even apple products), mixers/soft drink at Coles, clothes and even alcohol all reduced after buying in bulk or asking for a better price.

Maybe the stores operate on a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy!

Seriously, though, it's pretty easy to get a discount on mid-level luxury watches in most jewellery stores. In general, though, it is still far cheaper to get them overseas. When I was pretty serious about watches a decade or so ago, I was astonished at just how cheap Singapore was in comparison to Australia - an Omega that cost $2500 in Australia could be purchased for $1500 or less from an authorised dealer in Singapore. Japan was not quite as cheap, but even so, you could generally save at least one-third and sometimes quite a lot more on the same watch in Japan, as opposed to Australia.

In watches, as in most things, we pay a ridiculous premium in Australia. Sigh...
