Cutting down to once a week, maybe less in April. My gf is theoretically going completely dry.

It's been a long time since I've been bombed but I do have the odd drink here and there. Lady C and I seem to have a problem of going for a vacation, purchasing some random bottle of something and never drinking it. If our collection of stuff is less then 30 bottles I'd be shocked with most never much past open.....such is life.

If this city ever warms back up I am looking forward to a scotch and cigar on the deck but its been well over 6 months since that last happened.

We do this every time. I still have some tequila from our honeymoon, and the last time we went to Cancun we bought four smallish bottles of whatever...and I drank like mad to finish just one.

I also gave up drinking about 6 months ago. I think I'm taking a full year off.

I was down to a few beers a night on a few days a week, creeping back up to a few beers every night again. Sober days for me are either a) working on mundane stuff til I forget I haven't drank that day, or b) spending the day fighting with myself in my head about not having a drink when I'd like to, and not getting as much done as I'd like to, just monging out in front of the computer. Maybe 3 of (B) for every 1 (A) =\\
I have been drinking a little more but just lately I have late night ideas or will wake up and have ideas when everything else in my head is kinda on the back burner and that all goes into my note books and ****, and I don't want to stop the creative train from moving, because it's getting somewhere soon. I'm just gonna maintain some sort of balance (or lack thereof) til I get what I'm working on finished.

Beginning of Dry April was a little rough with a big house party at my gf's house. We were the only two sober people there which really sucked. I ended up smoking up, which I rarely do and it still felt like a copout...no more for the rest of the month.

I'm giving this a try. Goal is three weeks without a drink. Four days in I've already survived two social gatherings in a bar, and am supposed to attend another Friday. Looking forward to the savings in calories and dollars.

Keep it up! Sounds like you are over the biggest hurdle already.

Just noticed this thread (which began, I see, right after New Year's).

I hit the 10-year sobriety mark in January, but I am a Pure D alcoholic. A lot of what is described in this thread sounds to me like guys who are hitting it harder than they should and are trying to cut back.

These are vastly different things.

After 10 years (much of which I spent working at the rehab where I got sober) I can offer this guideline: If your alcohol use affects your family life, your job, or brings you to the attention of the police, then by definition there's a problem. Whether or not it requires total abstinence, treatment, AA or some combination of these is something the individual needs to decide.

A very helpful book on the subject is "Under the Influence" by James Milam and Katherine Ketcham (and a followup, "Beyond the Influence," by Ketcham).

Thanks to a few months of ridiculous bar tabs and a few nights I'd rather not repeat, it looks like I'm [mostly] cutting myself off until Memorial day weekend. Now, when I say cutting off I mean I'm not buying drinks. If drinks are offered or I go to a party I will help myself. I will break this plan on May 14 thanks to the bmore meetup. Otherwise, I'll be alcohol free.

Now, some of you will scoff at the above caveats, but if you knew me, you'd know this is a big step in [some] self control.

what is a ridiculous bar tab, by American standards?
