umm, interesting. Where I go to donate in BK at the local Salvo - it is so nasty in there, and the clothes so rank, that I look and shudder and leave ASAP.

I can not believe you guys have such good luck thrifting.

Theres good ones and bad ones. The ones i go to are all clean and dont smell. Theres a few down the street that i absolutely refuse to go in because they're hot, stinky, and everything in them is filthy dirty. I happen to live in area that has a large amount of people with wealth so the thrifts here tend to give up some very good things, but sometimes you'll end up with nothing more than a tie and then a few weeks later you'll get bags of stuff. It's all very hit or miss it's just that when it hits it tends to be a big hit, atleast in my experience.

Also got a NWT pair of merona swim trunks for $2 to wear over my wetsuit (tearing up a suit a season is preferable to a wetsuit every other season). They are orange which should clash nicely with my 80's teal and purple spray top, red life jacket, and black/purple wetsuit.

Passed on some RRL shorts which were a lovely color but as much as I like RRL, I can't imagine wanting to wear these double pleated monstrosities

I am on quite the roll as of late. After a long dry spell I'm very happy to be hitting big again recently.
First those Borrelli pants the other day and then today:

1) Norton & Sons of Savile Row bespoke grey pinstripe suit - $30
2) Norton & Sons bespoke navy blazer - $10
3) Canali grey suit - $30 (funny it cost the same as the Norton & Sons)
4) Kiton tie - $2
5) 2 boxes of 12 Callaway HX Tour golf balls (24 Total) - $10
6) NIB Bushnell Golf Scope Rangefinder - $7

I came across a pair of Oxxford pants but left them behind because of a tear in the crotch (though fixable) and they were double pleated. Also, an Oxxford suit jacket that I left behind because it's a grey pinstripe.

The key for me lately has been ensuring to keep hitting my hot spots. I've been trying to hit the same dozen or so stores at least once every 2-3 weeks.

My wife just left the country for work for 10 days with the digital camera, but I'll try to get some pictures up as soon as I can get my hands on another camera. The suit was made in '84, the blazer '85. Both made for the same gentleman.

I've mentioned it here before. Here in NYC there is a chain of thrift stores called Housing Works. I believe their mission is helping people who are homeless and people who have AIDS. I know some here have posted long-winded rants against advertising where you thirft. I've mentioned Housing Works here several times, and I'm still making my scores. There are a number of locations, and it's luck, timing and perseverance. That's all. (I should add the Kiton tie and golf stuff was found at a nearby Goodwill).

I was just joking but I actually like that you posted the info. I have just recently started to thrift on a serious basis and in addition to the great bargains and the thrill of the hunt I think one of the big benefits is that our money goes to support great causes instead of just corporate profit.

I'm on the road in Ohio and I hit a Goodwill in Columbus. I came across 3 vintage pieces. I don't normally buy vintage but these were absolutely pristine:

1) custom made 3/2, center-vented, 1/4 lined (Oxxford style), plain-front suit in a dark olive with a very subtle "Mad Men" mohair sheen look. Looks almost Black Fleece-ish: narrow lapels, shorter jacket, slim pants. Appears to have been made but never worn.
2) custom made 3/2, sack suit in a dark blue nailhead. This one was apparently for the same customer but was more traditional: the lapel width is current for J.Press and the pants are a bit more full, though still plain front. My guess is the guy got a bit older. If worn it appears to have been done infrequently.
3) Cashmere 3/2 sportcoat in caramel by Majer.

The guy must have been one of us: these were well cared for and not dry-cleaned to death. That's what's always kept me away from buying older pieces; that stiff, almost oily feeling from suits that have been dry-cleaned too often.
