Teeth-gnashingly frustrating day at the op shops today.

Found a nice Cornaliani suit in my size in a nailhead gray. I started to get excited until I noticed the pants pockets. The previous owner had spilled ink all over the inside of the pants. There was another one, but it was too large for me at e58r, and it also looked a bit dodgy inside the pants. Huge shame - they still had their spare buttons, authenticity check card and wooden suit hangers with brass rods.

Also found a 42R Pal Zileri sports coat, a tweedy black with a white windowpane. Very nice, but too small for me. Also had a few pulled threads, so I had to pass.

I almost bit on a Charles Hill tie with an elephant motif until I noticed a pulled thread at the point of the blade.

It wasn't a complete waste; I found a BB Makers oxford shirt and a pair of Boss chinos (good enough for lounging around in) for a combined $10. Also picked up a couple of cotton hankies that can double as pocket squares. But, ah, what could have been.

Here's a nice little thrifting story from Down Under: Meanwhile, US film star William Sadler snuck under the radar to quietly soak up the atmosphere from inside the Emirates' exclusive Venetian Palace marquee. On his first visit to Melbourne, Die Hard 2 villain Sadler, who's in Australia filming for the American HBO TV series Pacific - produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg - had to improvise to satisfy strict Melbourne Cup dress regulations. "I didn't even bring a suit this time. I left it at home, so I had to go to the op shop and buy some slacks. Seriously, shoes, slacks shirt and tie - $25, and they get it all back tomorrow," he said. Sadly, no photo. Article

Not a whole lot in this part of the world lately. A very nice Saks store brand tie and a BB tie with the tags clipped...both sucked up by my oldest son who is now forced to wear ties on a daily basis. Also the Cole Haan suede slip-ons whose provenance I was seeking in the Men's Clothing Forum.

Nice shirts, Alan. I love the Barba. I've seen Guy Rover shirts here and there. They're pretty good--if not quite the same (dare I say?) artisanal product as the Barba. There's something about picking up multiples.

Well, I finally had an interesting time thrifting today. Things have been so miserable here in SF that I decided to take a trip to San Mateo. And boy did that pay off. Right away I found a great blue blazer in herringbone cashmere from the legendary Henry Stewart. I can see why he was a legend. The coat fits perfectly and is like nothing else I own. The same store also yielded up a wonderful and unusual custom Oxxford suit from May 1960--three button pitch black mohair. Really cool, though I have no idea where something like this might be worn. A couple stores over was good too: brown Donegal tweed jacket with brown velvet collar made by Norman Hilton for (the old, natch) Abercrombie & Fitch as well as a dark blue with lighter blue windowpane Shetland hacking jacket from Hackett. I'll post pictures when I get back home tomorrow.
