Thanks. I think pejsek just isn't posting his finds. And it's hard to compete with J. I've had a pretty good run of luck the past few weeks after a bad drought, though. Ultimately, I don't think my metropolitan area has the retail to compete with Seattle or San Francisco thrifting.

I went through all 58 pages today a very nice thread well done J for starting it. On Tuesday I will hit my local charity shops and I'll see what can I find in my local shops never been to any charity shop in my life.

This is such a great thread. Thanks to all who have posted. Before SF, I had never considered entering a thrift shop - I think I am hooked now. I have not enjoyed tremendous success but I did find a Hugo Boss sport coat BNWT and button packets for 50 cents a couple weeks ago (I know what you all think of Boss but it needed no alterations, fits perfect and I didn't have to steal from my kid's piggy bank to buy it.)

I had to do some work in the Denver area today and stopped by a couple thrift shops. I really need a blue sport coat but did not find one in my size. I did score some pretty nice ties IMO.

1 Green/Blue Robert Talbott Best in Class and 1 RT Burgundy Best in Class
1 Funky Yellow/Blue Charvet
1 Brioni Yeaahhhhhhhh!!!!!! I was shocked to see it. I know there are fakes out there but this seems quite well made. Perhaps someone can comment from the pics.

I also found a barely used pair of Merrell World Piece shoes that will come in quite handy during the upcoming 24 hour shifts at the Hospital I have to look forward to.

These things are really comfortable but not so nice to look at. All for $14 !!!

Yeah, I was shocked when I saw the Brioni pictured above in my post as well. It's the first Brioni I've run across. I also found my first Charvet recently. They're clearly hard to come across. Almost my entire tie collection is made up of thrift ties from the past 2-3 years. I'm often tempted by retail or sale ties, but when you can find a Brioni for a couple of bucks it's hard to pay real money.

Ivory shoe horn, Drew & Sons, London, ca. 1920. Needs to be cut down half an incj or so, because of chips and cracks at the (very thin) edge. It's part of a full toilette suitcase with silver-topped bottles and stuff.

Tell me about it; thrifting has ruined me. It inverts the whole cost pyramid so that expendables (socks, underwear) are the most expensive for what they are and long-term luxury items (self-tipped and seven-fold ties) the least expensive for what they are.

Otherwise, nothing good to report lately, just a batch of Barneys shirts for a couple bucks each.

How do you clean/wash ties or do you clean them at all since you buy them used? I saw a bunch of Robert Talbot in good conditions at a thriftstore for $3/each... is that a good deal?

Were they Robert Talbott "Best of Class"?

At that price, and if they're not ugly, they could be the "Worst of Class" and be worth the money.

true, true...

As for washing/cleaning ties, I recommend doing nothing... If it has a stain, don't buy it... ties are very delicate, and many dry cleaning establishments would ruin ties if given the chance...

I've run about 50/50 on dry cleaning ties. I generally follow the rule of don't bother, but if the stain seems possibly treatable, and I just can't resist, I'll give it a fly. Likely as not, though, they'll ruin it.

Robert Talbott is a great tie to pick up at thrift, both regular line and Best of Class. I don't know that I've ever seen a 'Studio' line tie that I would wear. Some of their BoC ties are a little...adventurous...in design as well. They're all well made, though, and fairly common at thrift.
