I can just hear it now .... "You're not coming to town with me in those big, clumpy boots... here, put these on, you'll look lovely......"

He's obviously bricking it in case any of his mates see him!
Yes,but would you say NO "Bollocks i'm not wearing that" to that bird?

Not slagging these two particularly but was this the kind of thing you meant (Bristol Skinheads 1970)?
No ,these guys look inoffensive compared the ones I recall Buttons.

No it was not Jason`s,I like that and the other Graphics. There was something Posted, quite a few hundred Pages ago where it showed a Skinhead(with possibly a Sledgehammer) that reminded me of the way Media was thinking-we were Right Wing Thugs(or similar portrayal). It had "Walk Proud" over it.

I posted that, as a curiosity. It was a record by an american hardcore punk band called Walk Proud.
The funny thing is that they weren't even a skinhead band as far as I know...

It is pretty ironic the guys look pretty much as far as you can from skinhead but the album cover in question is a very unflattering image and is a culmination of what people associate with an 80's skinhead.

You are absolutely right regarding the first 'replica' shirts. The Red and Black striped shirts were first introduced as City's second kit in season 1968/69. Malcolm Alison had an eye for style and some of our kits were dazzling when he was there - remember the all white kit with a red and blue sash down the shirt? They were immediately a hit with the fans and worn on the Kippax and by not only girls. This was the first time I saw braces being openly worn- early 1969. The outfit was Red and Black striped shirt, sky blue braces holding up Levi's or Wranglers, boots (often hobnail or commando - usually black) Unfastened Denim Jacket over the top (or maybe still a cord Wrangler Jacket at that stage). OK, not a great look, but substitute the football shirt for a Ben Sherman and you have the original Skinhead look right there, though I hadn't heard the term at that stage. Some of the lads had crops by now, some didn't, but a definite terrace look was emerging.

Painted miners helmets and construction helmets had been around since 1967.
Slight diversion off topic, but I do remember that white one with the red and blue sash, roytonboy. Big Mal certainly had an eye for style. Lifted the red and black stripes from AC Milan and I think the red and blue sash one was from another Italian team - Cagliari? I'd a feeling they won Serie A in the early 70s, breaking the usual Milan-Turin-Rome monopoly. Still, if he was pinching Italian style it's a pretty good style to pinch.

And interested to hear what was being worn on the terraces just before I started standing on the Kippax.

I actually got hold of a construction helmet myself in late 1970 and started painting it up - but it never got anywhere near Maine Road. By that time the local constabulary were a lot more wary about what they'd let you in with and if they hadn't confiscated it I'm sure someone bigger than me would have had it off me in no time (given my track record with scarves) so it stayed at home. Never really saw them after that anyway.

Bristol was my home from age 5 to 14 - I can almost hear the groans of ‘Oh no, not another carrot muncher’.  Don’t worry, I have almost completely forgotten the ‘krek waiters peak Bristle’.

Nothing wrong with Bristle. Sometimes I even admit to having been born there. :D

I can well remember seeing mods transitioning between 'modernist' and 'flower power' styles. It was about the same time that many mods were wearing military tunics. Chip Hawkes of the Tremeloes comes to mind, not saying he was a 'mod' as such, but I saw him on stage wearing a guardsman's red tunic with loads of braid - most blokes that wore these wore them in plain red. Here's a pic of the Trems - two of them have blue tunics on...

... I remember seeing two mods in a shop in Blackpool - must have been late 67. They both had on Levis and desert boots, and both had identical short 'French crop' hairstyles. One was wearing a blue surfer jacket, the other had on a corduroy kaftan. It was a light sandy colour, and had a subtle paisley pattern on it, and he had it done up to his neck, Nehru-style. It didn't seem like a 'transition' style, however, just a bloke trying out a different mod 'look'. I never saw either of these guys again, so I can't say whether they stayed maintream mod, went hippy, or what.

Your mum could even get a sewing pattern for a Nehru jacket back in the 60s!

Slightly off topic I know, but here's a question for all on here. When you were young, what clothing did you hate having to wear?

For me it was Darned Socks - my mum insisted on darning my worn out socks until they literally fell apart. I can still remember the horrible scratchy feeling of the darned part of the sock on my feet.

I first saw the painted construction helmets on United'S Red Army at Loftus rd in 1968 .. maybe it was a northern thing ?

" Up to that point they had always been knit with natural, country wool colours. Then along came the Acrylic knock-offs in Black/white/ Dayglo orange and similar ! What an eyesore !"

....like the kid on the cover of the Upsetters 'Clint Eastwood' album? Who is also sporting monkey boots (I think), a classic pair of pictures of the 'little brother' type skinhead i'd imagine:

I've just joined a reggae band as it happens, playing triangle......I just stand in the corner an ting.

i'll get me coat.
That kid on the cover im 99% sure was a major tout at football matches around london in the later decades .. saw him at stamford bridge last year and he looked about a 100 years old
