The Hanger Project: Affiliate thread - Page 110

Got a call from Kirby yesterday squaring up all the details for my slipper orders. Very nice guy, and very helpful (and patient with me flip flopping on quilting colors)! Can't wait for them to come in

Any chance of providing lower cost shipping options for shoecare products instead of FedEx?

I would love to support forum affiliates but at the current charge, theres absolutely ZERO reason to buy any shoecare product on Hanger Project simply due to the exorbitant S&H costs.

USPS Priority is good, has tracking, and costs way cheaper than FedEx, especially if you go through some S&H shipping postage companies.

I have quite a few hangers from Kirby, but I have often thought they would do better business if they had more inviting shipping prices. Every time you buy something, it's basically the cost of a hanger in itself. Most retailers offer free shipping if you spend X dollars or offer very cheap shipping if it's a small item (USPS standard for small packages is like $4-6).

Same for hangers, which I don't mind paying for higher shipping costs due to the volume/size of the box.

But for shoecare or any other product the S&H cost is pure bullshit.

I used to wait for free shipping over XXX (bullshit IMO, that's not freel) to order shoecare products from Hanger Project.  Nowadays I only purchase from other channels purely due to exorbitant S&H charges as Hanger Project's prices is way more expensive if factoring in S&H.

There's always a couple of ties I really like but the shipping to Australia kills any chance of me actually buying them 😦.

What are you guys talking about? We have FREE SHIPPING on any shoe care order over $75 and FREE SHIPPING on al orders over $125. We changed this exactly because of that feedback.

We also have flat rate shipping. One item is just $7. Everything shipped via FedEx. We ditched USPS because of lost packages and high breakage. When shit breaks, customer doesn't bear that cost. We do. So we made a business decision earlier this year to abandon USPS because reships were super high.

Can someone give an example? Because I'm a little lost in this conversation.

Unfortunately I for one don't always find that I need $75 worth of shoe care products that it takes to get the free shipping. Sometimes given the amount of products I have already I only need one thing and not anything more. Sometimes I may need about $40 and In these cases which are pretty typical for me given the amount of the stuff I already have on hand the seven dollars for shipping is a bit much or at least more than I am willing to pay. So In these cases I do my best to find it elsewhere even though I may save only $3 or $4. I guess somehow to me that $7 seems a bit excessive.

Well, if for $3 you are shopping somewhere else, I would exactly say that you are "supporting ASW affiliates." The challenge for me, as someone who earns his living selling this stuff, is that the economics become very difficult when StyleForum members are offered 10% Off and Free Shipping on items that don't cost much. For just $40 of polish, I'm essentially losing money offering 10% off and Free FedEx shipping.

I really try to be reasonable with our shipping. Just recently we began globally offering free shipping on all products. But there has to be a minimum in order for it to make sense for us also. We've added flat-rate shipping for people who are just looking to buy one, two, or three items, and we are working on adding even further discounted shipping for tiny things like shoe laces, collar stays, etc. (aka. things that can easily be shipped in a padded envelope).

And in addition to all of this, we try to support the community through things like Shoe Shine Guides, Shoe Shine Sunday, prizes, traveling to New York for the trunk shoe, etc. etc.

Shipping to Australia is a bitch - I agree - and we have really, really good FedEx rates. We've stopped shipping USPS because (1) FedEx in some cases is actually cheaper, (2) USPS was losing stuff all the time, and (3) the unpredictability of USPS transit times were really upsetting customers. As an online merchant, we receive 100% of the blame and anger when our shipping providers don't deliver. We are also 100% responsible for merchandise that is lost in transit or arrives damaged. So, over the years, we've really come to the mindset that we'd prefer to subsidize shipping (which we do) and ship everything via express courier.

THAT SAID, we did just recently launch hangerproject.CA for Canada that offers domestic shipping rates and are preparing to launch hangerproject.CO.UK for domestic shipping within the United Kingdom.

I don't think I was aware or I had not used the SF 10% off for these items for one thing. I'll have to try to remember this in the future. This then does make this almost a wash and by the way I do appreciate your contributions to the SF community.

Cheers,

Dan

I also never realized that there was a 10% off for SF members.

I often want things but find myself shying away from ordering once I saw the shipping costs, not going to another affiliate but rather just not ordering them. The $75 free shipping cap does make me feel better about that though. For my nicer purchases I have accepted that Hanger Project is more of a luxury provider and not trying to sell me the basics. I once had a package never arrive (the only time it has ever happened) and they shipped another one no problem so you do get great customer service for your money.

On an unrelated note any video of the shoes being shined with a yak hair brush? I am considering one but want to see what kind of shine if leaves before spending that much on a brush.
