This is the store for esoteric scents. I buy Kolnisch Juchten here, and it is the only outlet that sells it as far as I know. They also, of course, have mainstream scents. The owner, Andre, is reputed to be something of a curmudgeon, but he has been nothing but courteous to me. In fact, I recently bought a shaving brush and he took out various shaving razors to show me and also gave me a free tube of German shaving cream after asking me what I used. He has a giant vintage lucite Plisson shaving brush in one of his display counters. He told me that the German shaving brush I had bought was just as good as Plisson; apparently he used to go to the trade shows in Paris, Milan, Berlin, etc. in the '70s.

It's been on my list of places to go for a while now.

I have a nice vintage sterling-tipped Badger brush for shaving, but a pain, it needs polishing all the time.

The more exotic scents can be worrisome - I hope they aren't exotic names for Patchouli.

I've often wondered about who one would contact to replace a head for one of those precious-metal brushes. Maybe Milan's G.Lorenzi would have some contacts, but I am not in Milan.

The best Patchouli I've smelled is by Etro--it is not one of those vaguely nasty scents redolent of prematurely greying hippies and their tie-dyes, their marijuana or sandals.

Interesting - Etro. I think I have a shirt with such a label if it is the same house.
But if you're in 'Constantinople' aka Istanbul or thereabouts, I've always thought it the favourite scent of the Mahdi in Khartoum, at least in use with incense.

Yes, it's by the paisley-famed fashion house. It's somewhat difficult to find, but New York's Aedes store has it online.

I've always thought the Zoroastrian habit of burning sandalwood decadent, and presumably, quite fragrant.

Yes - I've always associated the scent as decadent. It reminds me of what it must have been like when Prince Youssoupoff and his clan murdered Rasputin in one of his overly-gilt drawing rooms.

I had the most outrageous experience at Jacqueline and wanted to warn everybody. First of all, Jil Sander #4 Eau De Parfum was of poor quality, and when I tried to return it, the owner became immediately aggravated and asked me to leave the store! I did, leaving the fake fragrance on the counter, and he threw it at my back. . . . .

Yikes

One time I was there, a man outside went into his door alcove to talk on a cell-phone. Andre promptly went outside and told him to leave, calling him assorted names.

I like this man.

I think Bravo should cut him a deal for a reality show.

Etro`s patchouli is very nice, LK, I agree. BUT, my favorite is Montale Patchouli Leaves... it has the definite patchouli note without the nastiness/hippiness, but also a very deep earthiness that is very interesting with just the right touch of vanilla. L`artisan`s Patchouli Patch is a little too sweet, and SMN`S Patchouli is a little TOO MUCH patchouli, so I find the Montale as perhaps the best balance. Nevertheless, it`s way too expensive, so probably Etro all-in-all is the best bet (it`s probably half the price of the Montale).

Etro, though, is really a hidden gem for fragrances. Most designer houses release lukewarm, boring scents, but from Messe di Minuit (churchy incense!), Etra Etro (hard to describe... but good!), Mahogany, etc... Etro really does a great job. There are others I have tried... but off hand I can`t remember (it`s really early in the morning... so I`ll edit this later when I remember!)
