Can I get away with this outfit?

I own literally one suit and I'm trying to get some more use out of it, so I decided to see what I could put together with the jacket and a decent-looking pair of jeans. I have kind of a (read: very) limited wardrobe at the moment and I'm flat broke, and this is the best I could come up with. My question: could I get away with wearing this? (also any suggestions for improvement would be nice)

note: the suit is black with a subtle pinstripe since it's hard to tell in the picture

i don't think you're going to get very positive answers to your question. the short answer will inevitably be a no. also, to contribute some sort of advice that will cost you zero dollars...don't flip the collar outside the jacket. in the end, the best advice will be to scour thrift stores/ebay/b&s forum to try to find something that a) fits better than anything you're currently wearing and b) is a little less.....messy.

You can 'get away' with anything you like, but the look can be improved IMO.

Given the flat broke situation, here's my take.

1. The collars need to be reigned in.

2. Do you have any other jeans? Even if they are more destroyed, slimmer is better for this. A tad lower waisted too IMO.

3. Shirt tucked in.

4. There are some shiny black lace-ups behind you.

I second the advice not to pop the collar over the jacket.
I think it might also look better if you tuck the shirt in.

If you really want to wear that jacket with jeans, I think you should wear some jeans that are darker and less worn/distressed.

I did indeed try the collar inside the jacket at first, but it just didn't look right. The front of the shirt would bunch up near the collar and stick out. For some reason the collar on that shirt has always caused me trouble, it's quite odd...

I'd say you need to do a reshoot. Shirt tucked, change jeans, post another picture

I see what you mean about the shirt collar. Not much you can do about that - got any other options? How about some other pants if no more jeans?

As far as shirts go, I've got a black one and a brown one with thinner stripes than that shirt that I couldn't see working well with the jacket, but I have some solid gray shirts that would work.

Other pants I've got black, white khaki, and light brown khaki. (aside from tons of assorted cargo pants)

Also looking back would a darker colored belt have worked better with those jeans?

that actually looks better already. By the way, have you checked out the Streetwear and Denim forum...for what you're going for, you may get way better feedback and ideas there. As for the collar...you're going from the 'guido' look to shoving it under your jacket...neither are really what you want. take a look at 0b5cur1ty's collar...it's inside the jacket but fully 'popped'. http://www.styleforum.net/showpost.p...ostcount=19180 In the end, you can't avoid the fact that you're going to have so spend some money on a new outfit. I didn't say a lot...but some. Ideally, everything you're wearing needs to be replaced. The black suit jacket doesn't really work in the casual look you want, nor do the jeans, nor the clunky dress shoes & worn converse, and the belt doesn't work. In fact, the shirt may be the only thing to last from this getup. wait, a lightbulb just went off...the suit jacket doesn't fit you that bad...why not just wear the entire suit and shirt? I have a feeling it would look a lot better than the current look.

True, the entire suit does look really good. Mainly I'm going for the jeans + suit coat because I'm worried the whole suit will come off as too fancy. I had another thought though, would a T-shirt work instead of the collared shirt? That would alleviate the collar issue. Maybe a nice T-shirt and I invest in a darker pair of jeans.

It's a black pinstripe suit. What is he going to wear it to, a convention of area mafia dons?

It's not that bad, the pinstripes are practically invisible from ten feet away in good lighting...

I gather you're trying to make something of that jacket and those jeans. The advice so far is all good, and so are your adjustments. The jacket is appropriate to a more tidy look. You might try rolling up the bottoms of the jeans (inside, not outside-as-cuffs) to have less break (crumpling) at the bottom. But that might not stay in place unless the jeans are fairly stiff material.

Embowafa's advice referencing 0b5cur1ty's collar is spot on. Pulling the collar up your neck will straighten out the cloth to where it was intended to be. If you never wear a tie then this may feel strange at first, but the suit jacket is part of a smoother (closer to your body) look that you'll come to like. If the collar becomes a little bit too high then only a new shirt will solve that, but I don't doubt that this adjustment will look better than having the collar too low.

Edit: t-shirt (even plain white) is very hard to get away with, unless everything else is spot on. Perhaps if your suit was a plain colour. I am guessing it won't work, but don't let that stop you testing it out. Also, if you're going with the suit idea, I hope you have a black belt.

I say ditch the jacket. It doesn't look good.

If you're going to a place that lets you wear jeans, just do it sans jacket until you find a nicer one. If money is a problem, start looking at thrift stores and the B&S thread.
