Most places in NYC, esp Haandi and others on Lexington ave, suck...they microwave there food and all smell like ****. Just because there are cabs outside doesnt mean its good. It just means its cheap.

The best place Ive been to is Haveli on 2nd and 6th...

Ummmm part of any race / culture / whatever will eat crap food because its cheap. Indians are no different.

Go to Whitechapel, Tooting, Southall, etc in London and you will see Indians eating some crappy ass low quality food. You will also see some Indians eating in some damn nice establishments.

For that matter, you will see some pale folk eating in crappy ass low quality food places in whitey town. But they can also be seen in nice joints at times.

Whats funny is when you see white people eating in the crappy Indian joints and even though the food is crap, and all the Indians know it, the white people all think that they are getting an authentic experience with the real good food.

The cheap Indian food in Southall and all over England is still tasty. Best junkfood out there. And it sure doesn't stink like ghulkhan says..

Yes, haandi etc microwave their food, but they don't hide it or something. Its right there in front of everyone. Many desi dishes (haleem, nihari etc) come out fine.

Is there better Indian food in NY. Sure. Have not been to Haveli but tabla is little pricey and fancy. Went to another good place that had white table cloths and all. Quite good but much more expensive than haandi (which I have not been to in 10 months). Haandi and its ilk are good and cheap. Allows one to return and try new things. With more expensive restaurants, one is not so carefree.

I spent a few years in Ohio in the mid 80s. At that time Banana peppers were the spiciest things in the local grocery stores. Chicago had tasty eats (now defunct??), NY had Shaheen on Lex.

chicago now has a handful of very good indian places - although, when I think of a good indian place, I am thinking of my office cafeteria in new delhi. I am not even imagining that I will find a place that is as good as the places I would spend money on in india.

I don't know about that, some of the most dodgy places in areas like Southall and Whitechapel have very good food. Better than places like Veeraswamey, Bombay Palace, Chutney Mary, etc.
Shahi Naan Kebab on the main A4020 about halfway between Ealing Broadway and Southall Broadway (there are two, this is the one on the right side of the road if you are approaching from the east) has some of the best seekh kebabs you will ever taste.
Omi's on Beaconsfield Road in Southall, which is just off the main road that takes you from the Broadway (A4020) to Hounslow. Excellent authentic punjabi food, saag with makhi ki roti, and chole bature are very good here.
In Whitechapel, Lahore Kebab House on Umberston Street (off the Commercial Road) is pretty good, not as good as the places I've mentioned in Southall but a lot closer to town...

I didnt say that there wasn't good food to be found in those areas, but there are also some cheap crappy places. Just like any other culture, Indian people have their fair share of crap low quality food.

I know. I've had enough (extended) family, collegues, friends take me for crappy meals that I dont take their advice on restaurants anymore.

I had heard good things about Lahore until a little while ago when a few different people have told me its gone downhill. I havent eaten there personally though. Have you been there recently?

Las time I was at Lahore Whitechapel was about a month ago. The curries have gone downhill, but the tandoor food is still quite good. It defiantly is not as good as it used to be, but its still palatable.
I don't know of anywhere else that cheap, and close to St. John's Wood that offers food like that though.
I believe you're in Primrose Hill, so I'm sure you appreciate how much closer Whitechapel is than Southall.
On the subject of Indian restaurants going downhill in London, there used to be two great places in Bayswater, Standard and Khan's, which now serve nothing more than your average balti house - I guess that's what most people in London want...
Seriously try Shahi Naan next time you're in Southall - you won't want to sit there, but for the food it's worth it, have seekh kebabs only...

I can't be bothered to spend the time going out to Southall, particularly as there is no other draw / other things I want to do in the area. You are right, Whitechapel is much closer, espcially if I'm out with friends for drinks in the City or going out in Shoreditch afterwards. Will have to try Lahore once I start spending more time at home.

I remember when we used to visit London in the early 90s, and my parents would take us to Khans. If I recall correctly you had to queue up for a seating right when they opened, but the food was incredible. Any idea how that Porte de Indes place is? I think its in Bayswater
