Thanks FB! Any specific color on the Chucks? High or low top?? Sorry for all the questions but this is so far out of what I am familiar with that I must ask.

I'd say skip the Chucks and go for the Clarks desert boot in dark brown with a nice pair of straight-legged denim or a well-fitting pair of chinos. Chucks are for the younger crowd, although many here might disagree.

You don't necessarily have to get Chuck Taylors... However, the Chucks I wear are lowtops in olive green. Going to someplace like Bloomie's would seriously help... Gola's, Adidas Stan Smith's, or Converse Jack Purcell's might be options for you to try.

Dedalus makes a good point with Clark's desert boots. I'm wearing a pair at the moment with a pair of fitted charcoal pinwale cords. Great looking casual shoes... I don't think Chuck's are too young for you, though they certainly would deviate considerably with your normal style.

buy a short peacoat and some (relatively) slim denim. Seeing that you're only 36, you're definetely young enough to still look (remotely) hip. Haha just kidding.

LOL!! I have the peacoat covered, had it for years. I will say that at times like this that I feel much, much older than 36.

If your teenage kid complains that you're not hip enough, you're too old to be hip.

For a good fail-safe denim I'd say avoid 7's and get some Earnest Sewns - you can find them most places 7's are sold and they are a far superior jean.
Ralph Lauren polo's are fine, although I have a similar build as yours and I have found Benetton polo's to be cut very well for my body.

For someone in his position, I'd say either jean works, honestly. Remember, he's doing this so he doesn't look like retar-dad with his little girl in LA. So for tooling around, I'd say just go with anything she'd approve of, and chances are she knows 7s, or maybe Diesel, stuff like that. IMO, ES works well too.

Seeing as you're so close to the trip, might I suggest going with Diesel over the others for one reason: they come in different lengths. You really don't have time to have shortening done, what with the NY break in there, but you can get Diesel in a 30 length, which it sounds like you'd need. Bloomingdales has a good selection, and if you're in Boston (which it sounds like) there's a decent Diesel store on Newbury street. If you want to get into cooler denim, stick around, read, and learn, but if you want something to make your little girl just a little less embarrassed by her dad, go with something easy. Don't go overboard pre-trip, because jeans shopping in LA is second only to maybe NYC (some would say it's number one), and it'll be something to do with her while you're here. Definitely hit Fred Segal on Melrose to upgrade your denim wardrobe.

Everything in this post is very good advice (Clarks desert boots/straight leg jeans). Also, don't buy denim that has fake fades.

Who gives a ****? Obviously not the OP, he just wants to look cool for his daughter, and I think her idea of cool may very well involve just that kind of jean. No need to indoctrinate the poor guy yet. . .

The mall across the street from the Hyatt Regency has a Bloomies, Macys, Thomas Pink, and a Brooks Bros. I'd follow DGP'S suggestion and pick up some denim and a shirt or two. Skip the chucks and get something casual but a little more upscale.

That's true. I wouldn't, however, devote much time to that mall. It's not that it's not a decent mall, but you could go to that same mall in a hundred different cities, you're gonna be in LA. If you wanna do mall shopping for the trip, I totally support that, and as far as shoes, you could always go for some Tigers, which are Asics higher end street shoes, or if you want to keep a little of that New England preppy style, go with some suede mocs/drivers, which have the advantage of working with or without socks. Lastly, make sure you get a bitchin pair of shades pre-trip.

I thought it was established somewhere in this thread that he was trying not to look like a douchebag. I must have misunderstood.

Just having pre-distressed jeans won't make him look like a douchebag. And so what if he does, as long as his 14yr old thinks he looks cool. Considering what he was planning on going with, it sounds like that's all that really matters. Who knows, she may think he looks like an idiot in tight raw denim, in which case he's screwed anyways. Chances are mall jeans are what she thinks will make dad look cool, which, for this purpose, is exactly what he should go with.

For 5 minutes. Until they drive through Silverlake or she picks up a fashion mag and completely recalibrates her cool-o-meter. Her tastes will probably be completely different within 20 minuntes of landing in LA. My girlfriends sister is the exact same age and has the most fickle, flighty tastes I have ever seen. If he doesn't want to not embarass her, he is wasting his money buying something that is on its last legs in terms of being style acceptable. Faded jeans are about at the same place that acid wash was in 1995.
