as much as I love em (they work like a dream for a high instep) they are pretty narrow and started out incredibly stiff. First wear they bruised 9 out of 10 of my toes badly - that took forever to go away.

For some reason the 222 seems to agree with me. My feet are a bit on the narrow side. Also, ever since I saw the pair that is on display at my local retail store, I couldn't help but love the style. To me it's a perfect match for the brown shell.

Nah.  Wife's a SAHM now.  Less $.   I'll definitely get something in ruby red though.  Don't want to miss out on a shell color.  Except that dark brown they offered.  I could never tell the difference.  How about a ruby red Fifth Avenue?

I have bought many of them from the shoebanks and also new from AE.com. I think both are a crap shoot as I have received new shoes that could have been seconds and seconds that I have no idea what made them a second they look perfect.

Both can be returned if you are not happy so that's equal.

I tend to go for the ones in the shoe bank when the price is 50% of original of less.

Not sure of your size but always a good idea to also check the AE ebay store. I think I seen they have new first quality McAllister for $245 but this is the same as the sale price I believe. But it goes to show you that you sometimes don't need to wait for the sale you could have gotten the McAlister first quality for the past several weeks on the AE ebay store without waiting for the sale.

Really I think it up to how you feel based on my experience there is no guarantee new or shoebank that you will get a perfect shoe so IMO the only real diff is the price and the shoe bags.

.....yep, and the restocking fee.

RDA is not the biggest sale I've seen. 👎🏻

At the time of the last sale, most of the shell options in my size were Park Avenues, Randolphs, or Patriots; if they had Daltons or Strands, I would have grabbed one.

Now that I have all of my bases covered, I'm looking to replace a couple of pairs that don't fit perfectly with different models in a similar style that fit better.  My McGraw loafers have always been a little too narrow in the toe box; I can wear them to events, but if I wear them all day, for instance to work or for a day of traveling, then they begin to pinch.  Can you suggest a loafer with a wider toe box?  The Cavanaugh is $200 for firsts and $160 for seconds, although the only seconds colors in my size are walnut and black.  It'd be great if the were some snuff suede seconds lying around.

I understand your disappointment on the price of shell during the RDA sale. My personal "shell policy" arose from the realization that shell is is now less available and far more in demand than in the past. The price WILL continue to go higher and higher with the passing of time. What is high now will be a bargain in 2-3 years, especially if you get something on sale. For me personally, I pull the shell trigger when I want the the shoe, know it will fit and I find it available. On sale? A bonus. Good condition previously owned? Another bonus. Vintage or no longer available? Another bonus. I find that many sale prices on calf shoes is like waiting for a bus; another one will arrive after a while. But for me, I grab the shell bus when it is there and hope for a bonus.

So if the colors are blue, green and ruby red here's what I'm thinking: navy Dundee, green Strand, and ruby red Fifth Avenue.  If i had to do only one, it'd be the Fifth Avenue.  Thoughts?

You can't really go wrong with the ruby red.  I think that's a pretty unique and interesting shell color.   If I were getting one, I'd probably order a ruby Carlyle, Park Ave, Leeds or Delray / Lasalle.  But I know you already have a navy Carlyle and PA.  I would probably go with a ruby Strand or ruby Fifth Avenue.

I feel like burgundy shell might be too similar.  I have it in the PA, Strand, and a million other things.  Oddly enough, I do not have any shell FAs.

I like ALL your choices, though I can't help but think the MacNeil would look good in any of those shades.  Why do I feel you have that shoe covered?

Well in that case, go with the ruby 5th.   Another shoe many barnweasals on here will be jealous of.

I'm kind of feeling these shoes in the various colors:

-Navy: Dundee (yes another one, but with a natural welt/edge), Alumnus (add brass eyelets), Oak Street (add brass eyelets)

-Ruby Red: 1st Ave boot, Cornwallis, St John, Yorktown, Exchange place

-Green: Carlyle, McAlllister

I'll probably pick up 2-4 from this list...

Shell is great (or at least I imagine that it's great), but I would like to see a suede trunk show. Maybe then I could afford to buy something.

You all are making me green with jealousy.   A green Carlyle would be badass.  I also like the custom Oak Street idea.   And they will all have piping.   So jealous.

Oh well... I'll get a chance to own a navy calf PA soon.  :)

These are the only 2 pairs of shoes that caught my attention during the RDA Sale. I really wanted a suede cap-toe but paying over 300 for the Suede Strands is tough. Might just get the Strandmok. Looks nice as well.
