You're the devil...Merlot Jefferson 2.0 does look good but for $245 the Merlot McAllister firsts............ Its not a matter of should you get one, its which one will you get.... to pair with the Bartlett... Too far? haha
So after I woke up to the big announcement, I decided to take a ride to Paramus to check some fits, you know just in case. I'm sure some or all of this has been brought up at some point, but here are some observations and comments mostly related to the sale.
1) The Cheetah, Brisbane, etc are down to $149 for seconds. Very nice sneaker, but IMO, that price is closer to what they should have been for firsts. I can't imagine they were flying off the shelves at $245. Never the less the current price for seconds is good if you want them, the pairs I saw had no flaws I could see, and they're sneakers who is really going to care much? They run on the small side. I'm normally an 8E on the 65, I would need a 9D for these.
2) The Sea Islands at the outlet were the "æ version" and made in the DR. The insole is marked æ and the box has the Made by Allen Edmonds in the Dominican Republic sticker. The quality seemed just fine, but obviously they are not the same as the versions being sold at the Rack. They too run quite small, I also would have to size up to a 9D (or 9.5D if I wanted to wear socks) in order for them to fit.
3) Its $399 SHELLMAGEDDON!!! I can't really drop $1200 right now. But I certainly want to. The Black Dundees they had certainly got more tempting at $399, but still don't want to deal with the rough shell on the tips. Else, they'd be on my feet right now.
4) The new no-piping is HORRIBLE. Let me say that again, HORRIBLE! Compared side by side Carlyles with and without. Without the piping it looks down right cheap. Worse its like they took all this time to make a quality shoe from quality materials and then in the end they punted.
5) I can fit 8D in a Hopkinson REALLY well, but I've come to the conclusion I'd rather wear an 8E in a PA and lose a tiny fraction on the fit. So many good things about the Indy line, but too many little nagging misses that end up really bugging me. If there was a shell PA in my size right now on the bank, the money couldn't possibly fly out of my wallet any faster.
6) The Rack at Paramus had some interesting random pairs floating around. Including 2 pairs of Harrisons and a McClain. Also of note, a few Chocolate Suede 5th Ave. which looked delicious. Of course not in my size.
I predict within 2 years they will go back to the old piping. I refuse to buy a Carlyle with the new piping. It's okay on my Leeds 2.0 in walnut, but not for a pure dress shoe. A simple browse of internet reviews reveals lots of customers are not happy about the new piping. For God's sake, it looks like someone took a knife and chopped the shoe shoe. If anyone from AE is reading this, please listen to your customers -- most of us do not like the newer piping. I was considering a Hopkinson, but I'm hesitant knowing it has the new piping.4) The new no-piping is HORRIBLE. Let me say that again, HORRIBLE! Compared side by side Carlyles with and without. I picked up a pair of those chocolate suede Fifth Avenues past summer for about $150. I love them and may wear them to a wedding next weekend. I wish I didn't have to wear a suit every day so that I could wear them on weekdays more often.
