FedEx and VAT

I don't really shop online so I need some help.

I'm gone from 8:15am-6pm so I don't think I'll be able to get a package signed for during those hours. Since I no longer have a doorman that pretty much sucks.
If they leave the note on my door for the 1st delivery can I call call them and then have them hold it at a location for pickup? Or can I even give them the tracking # once I have it and have them never even try to deliver?

Also....when do you pay VAT?

You can prolly call them and have them just hold it at the center. VAT is often included in the price already. Customs is something you may have to pay separately before you can pick up the package but for packages shipped to the US that's pretty rare.

"Transportservice worldwide
Wordwide insured shipping within 3-4 days.
Please choose your country for FedEx shipping.
After this the system choose the perfect transportcosts you have to pay.
Fedex as our partner delivers the watch and will also ask you for the VAT of your country. "

The prices listed are without VAT on their website.

Then I looked in the FAQ section just now:

Do I need to pay the German VAT?

"All European and German customers have to pay the German VAT.
All non european customers can order without german VAT in our new Onlineshop under www.stowa.com. Except customers from Malaysia and Singapore.(this countries have to order also in the european shop -www.stowa.de-because Fedex can´t charge the VAT directly from them. This is a Fedex rule and we can´t change)"

I guess you don't have to pay it then. You could also potentially ship the package to your office unless they don't allow that kind of thing rather than picking it up.

Ah I see, that makes sense.

You shouldn't need to pay any German VAT.

You can definitely get it held at a depot for pickup once they leave the failed delivery card behind.

I think once you have the tracking number you can get them to divert it to be held at the depot... but personally I find it better not to confuse the expectd way the system works because that's how stuff gets lost. Maybe that's just my paranoia, but I generally let couriers try to deliver and leave the card, THEN contact them to hold it at a depot if need be.

My work has got seriously anal about holding personal deliveries too...

I bought some things from Luisa Via Roma and they shipped using FedEx. Apparently the VAT charges are later sent to you in a request letter and you write them a check. I think only FedEx does this as I've never had this with UPS. As for the delivery, I had to go to FedEx's local distribution center to pick up my parcel once they exceeded the re-deliveries.

You do not have to pay VAT. It's an EU sales tax, and you don't pay it if you're not in the EU, plain and simple.

FedEx will deliver to their stores if you give it as a shipping address, or will allow you to redirect a package to their store if you have the first delivery notice.

Just avoid all the trouble and have it shipped to -

[Your Name]
c/o [Name of Your Local Post Office)
NY, NY

THe post office will automatically hold the package for you for a week, and you just swing by and pick it up. I've never had a doorman in my 25 years in New York, and this has always been the easiest way to get shit delivered.

It must have been a US import tax.

Customs, you mean? Unless you're lucky. Not 17.5%, not levied by the EU.

Yes.

I postponed paying the fee until FedEx had to hire a collection agency threatening me with my credit rating.
