Buying cigars in New York

My lady's father is coming to town. He is apparently very protective of his daughter and she's a little nervous about our meeting. I am less nervous - I love his daughter and treat her accordingly, plus I'm good on paper.

Still, she mentioned he loves cigars, but rarely treats himself to one, so I thought it might be nice to buy one, or a few, for him. My problem is that I don't smoke cigars, so I have no idea.

Retailers and brands would be helpful!

Try the new Nat Sherman store (42nd and 5th) or Davidoff on Madison.

sboth of the above are very nice shops. also, across from Grand Central and in the financial district on Broad Street is Barclay Rex. Wish I could think of some more offhand, but all my purchases are online nowadays.

I'm sure the old man knows what he likes but they all will have great stuff, Davidoff, La Aurora, Padron, Fuente, Ghurka, etc.

Make sure you stop by the bank first.

there's also a decent looking place that I haven't shopped at on 6th off of 57th

On a sidenote, I was watching a rerun of Seinfeld last night, "The Cheever Letters" episode. One of the best episodes ever!

If they are from out of town, I agree a Nat Sherman Gotham is an NYC classic (~$10). Spend too much and he might call you on it - unless you make a ton of dough - in which case, I am recommending a fat Zino Platinum from Davidoff at Time Warner. They are $30 each, but large gauge and well made. But then he might want a bottle of Opus One as well...
