why -- did you see liverpool this season ?

Nope, I don't follow the EPL or club football much in general. Saw Suarez put up a big fat goose egg vs. Costa Rica though.

Suarez isn't a "good striker," he's a goal scoring savant. At least he has been for the past year or so.

Oh, EPL. Big deal. Isn't that the one where Sturridge and Mooney actually matter?

Club football means next to nothing in the WC and, to a lesser extent, the Euro. It gives a good indicator of who to look out for, that's it. So far Suarez hasn't done anything impressive.

Suarez's performance today has raised some questions for me.

There's all this talk about Messi and Maradona - all the articles hearken back to '86 and how Diego singlehandedly carried Argentina to a WCtitle. I don't think it's in Messi to do the same, at least as per the performance by the ArgentinaNT last week.

On the other hand, the dichotomy between Uruguay's performance against Costa Rica and then w/ Suarez against England has suggested in my mind that Suarez may be the man capable of singlehandedly taking a team to a championship. Heck, he almost did it with Liverpool this last season.

He was stopped four years ago. :) And he was already a killer when he played for Ajax.

Didn't see the CR match, just glanced at the outcome and Google's play-by-play.

Club football teams and national teams are not the same. I thought that was pretty obvious.

If you want a bit more to think about, have you considered that a lot of players are in different leagues and never face each other? Not to mention that the of the league itself is a big indicator of the player's performance. EPL is good, yeah, but so are a lot of others. Even taking just the better leagues, if you were to judge WC outcomes based on scorers alone you could take the top two scorers from each one, put them in their national teams, and still have not have enough spots in the WC quarterfinals schedule.

Like I said, most decent teams have a good striker. It's kinda necessary.

Also, I think Suarez is a ************* so there's that.

Full of what we call bullshit !!

To say they don't face each other regularly is plainly ridiculous as they all face each other in leagues within Europe (Champions League, Europa League , International Games etc etc) with players from all nations playing both together and against. The players in the national teams are generally the better players and they play in these inter nation leagues. Just have a look at the majority of the better players in this tournament and they all play within the European leagues especially the English premier league as that's where the big money is (at present) Sky broadcasting being the bank roller!!

To call Suarez a ************* either implies he's done something to a member of your family or you know sweet FA about Football !! I have no axe to grind here as he plays for a rival team in England but that man is a class finisher, work rate second to none and plays each game at 100% fit or not !! No one in England likes him as a person due to his many misdemeanours but totally respect him as a footballer and his undoubted ability. Every knowledgeable pundit in England attests to the same. Were you watching the same game as the rest of the world last night?? Suarez head and bloody shoulders above anything else on the pitch and scores two superb goals. Hate the guy with a vengeance but my god the adage "he shoots he scores!" applies to him.

With respect most of what you said was ridiculous the rest bollox!! Get with the plot !!

In fewer words, yes, Why, you aren't winning that "Suarez is garbage" argument here. Definitely not an upstanding citizen (although I would suspect more of those antics and show are for media's sake), but the dude's been tearing it up for years, while never having played for a "worldbeater" team (sorry liverpool fans, but y'all can't dispute that over the last 4 years either).

And others here can attest I am 1) not an EPL-fanboi and 2) Not an uruguayan hincha. But his performances over the last WCcycle have been relentless.

one of the more ridiculous stories I've read this morning was saying England just isn't suited to playing in the heat and humidity of Brazil. can't speak for Manaus but the Sao Paolo match was played in breezy 50F conditions.

I'm talking about competitiveness among scorers within their leagues. Goals scored by a player in the EPL can't be reliably compared to someone else's in La Liga or Serie A.

Suarez is a *************. He can play the game well (including the metagame ) but he's just a total ratfaced piece of typical football trash off the pitch.

And if Suarez can carry teams so well, how's Liverpool doing in interleague club comps?

Anyway, I think we can all agree that Gerrard singleheadedly gave the game to Uruguay.

To be fair, this is what I said:

So what's so spectacular about Suarez again? He's a good striker. Most decent teams have a good striker.

And I still maintain that.

And really, what prompted it was the few comments from people who think a single player can carry a team in the WC. C'mon, that's just obtuse.
