I know, it seems like a racket no? Most of my stuff stays unframed unless I find a vintage one on ebay for cheap that happens to match the same dimensions of the piece.

Seriously $195 to frame something that is basically 8"x8" but at least this was an expensive piece. I paid $150 to have a $15 picture framed once.

You really have to think about which pieces need good framing and which don't.

We have some pieces that the artist insisted needed to be floated in lucite boxes. He was right, but that meant $$$$$$$$. We also have multiple paintings by the same artist, some of which were framed by top rate guys and some by the corner store and it really made no difference.

I've only had to get 2 things framed myself, the rest I try to get the gallery to "throw in".

But, I like going to this "Family Owned & Operated" one over the Chinese Laundry equivalent.

This works best when they already have it nicely framed, as you can insist they give you the frame it is in. I haven't tried to have the gallery frame it and figure that would just be a negotiation over what kind of frame they will do.

Mattes are your friend. You can always get a larger frame than you need and use the matte to fit the piece.

Mattes are often a good idea anyway, and I have screwed up by leaving it out on one of my favorite paintings. The result is pretty bad, but it will cost me a lot to fix my mistake, so I have left it as is.

^ I agree mattes are important. I should have wrote proportions there I guess, not dimensions - I don't want to put a 10 x 10 piece in something that's 12 x 24.
