I have been meaning to post a review of this bespoke shoemaker in Santiago since I left Chile in September. When I searched the only useful review that I could find was on this forum (see: http://www.styleforum.net/t/263388/calzado-pepay-bespoke-shoemaker-in-santiago-chile-thead).
I have very little knowledge of shoe making, and even less of leather, but the price ($250) was so tempting that I had to give them a try. The shop is very traditional and it is clear from the selection on display that the older Chilean gentleman is the intended customer. They were friendly and patient with me, and took the time to explain the process and select the leather (they had about 5 black hides to choose from). They told me to bring some pictures of the style that I wanted, then they produced a sketch. Shoe vocabulary is not my forte, but I believe they told me that they make a custom last for each customer based on a paper plan.
In terms of style, the shoes came out almost exactly how I wanted. The first pair that I ordered are very comfortable and did not need to be broken in at all. I was so pleased that I immediately ordered a second pair. For some reason, the second pair needed a little breaking in, but nothing to complain about too much. Unfourtunately, I do not think I will be back in Chile anytime soon to order another pair.
Address: Tenderini 71, Santiago
Price: 125,000 Chilean Pesos (approx. $250) - prices vary slightly depending on the size of your foot
Black oxford toe-caps:
Brown oxford brogues:
I have a few other items from Chile that I will review soon.
