Found what I think is a vintage Brooks number 1 sack coat.

Hello,

This is my first thread. I've been a long time lurker. I started visiting thrift stores recently. I haven't found much but I did purchase a Brooks Brothers gray herringbone coat. I think it is a number 1 sack. It was obviously part of a suit. I bought it before researching and finding that you really can't use an old suit jacket as a sport coat. It is my exact size, 41L. I believe this to be 70's vintage from the union tag. I've been looking a Brooks Brothers website for a sport coat and I noticed the Fitzgerald cut ones fit rather trim and many are full or half canvased. It got me thinking that if I replace the buttons on this one with leather ones it would look like a sport coat. I appreciate your opinions. If it doesn't work then it doesn't work.

Thanks for reading.

I don't think leather buttons would work. When I think of leather buttons I think of tweed jackets; they wouldn't look right on a worsted wool jacket. The color, the worsted wool, the cut make it look like an obviously orphaned suit jacket. Don't waste time or money on it, find a proper sport jacket.

Frankly, if it fits well, and you're just starting out, I think it would look alright with leather buttons. An actual sportcoat would be better, but I doubt anybody but the cognoscenti would think it was an orphan if it had leather buttons. I've certainly seen my fair share of very fine herringbones sold as sportcoats. I think they're sub-optimal, but not awful.

It'll take what, less than $10 and under an hour of work? Then, you have something to wear while you hunt for better stuff. I actually think I have the same cloth, in navy. I'm debating whether I should get it altered and put brass buttons on it for winter, or if I should flip it.

It will always be what it is - an orphaned suit jacket. It will always look odd and certainly with leather buttons.

Get rid of it and have the patience until you can find the correct garment that fits.

Thanks for your opinions. At least it was a lesson learned for me. I'll keep my eyes open for a proper sport jacket.
