Suits in NYC

I am new to the Styleforum but I absolutely love the amount of good advice that I am finding here. I have searched through many threads on finding some good suits in NYC. It has been a lot to sort through so maybe I could get some help with this question. I currently need to update my suits for work. I typically only wear suits when I go to court but my new position will require it daily. Basically what I want to find is either MTM or even a good off the rack for the $800 to $1,000 range. I am looking to get about three or four. Not sure what everyone would recommend about two or three button, flat front, etc. I am exactly 6 ft tall with a normal build. I typically fit well into a 42. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are a good o-t-r 42R, C21, Filene's, or, occasionally, Loehman's have some nice choices in your price range. Also, there are frequent sample sales, I think the H_F one is coming soon. For M-T-M, Mr. Ned's seems to be a good choice in that price range. I also go to court and am a lawyer. How fashion forward will depend on the practice and the clientele. For example, representing major corporations in bankruptcy court may require a more toned down look than representing crack dealers in night court or maybe not.

In any event, I would think that well-fitted is what matters more, 2 or 3 button will work, as will front front or pleated. I think that what tends to stand out more are more bold color, pattern, or fabric choices.

I agree and thanks for the response. I am not an attorney but a fed. agent. Most of the time I am dressed down but always try to dress well. For court I am always in a suit. What I have now are all Hugo Boss suits and they have been fine but with my new role, I want to upgrade a bit.

Hickey Freeman is a good option. Suits there run something like 2 for $1000 on the final day of the sample sale and are a solid value. Isaia is frequently available at Century 21 for under $1000. You can probably do better on-line, but for conservative basics, it's hard to beat the HF sale. Also, check out Brooks Brothers sale floor. Golden Fleece can get to be a real bargain.

If I was in your position, I'd take it as long as you can. Much better to have only one HF suit than four if you decide the silhouette is not best for you.

I think Paul Stuart tends to be underrated on the forum. I was there last Saturday and think they are pretty nice - seem well made and hace a nice cut to them. With a decent sale (assuming they have them), they could be a decent deal and in your price range.

Did you miss the Paul Staurt sales thread? PS is very well respected here.

AFAIK it is relatively rare they discount suits in their store. When they do have sales, the discounts tend to stop at about 30% (again IIRC).

I just bought my son a suit at Sarar. They do not have a store in NYC yet.
they have a store in Woodbury commons and jersey gardens I think. For about $500 the suit was full canvas with nice details.

I may be wrong but it is my understanding that Paul Stuart's main line suits are Gianluca suits (Isaia's lower line, fused or partially canvassed) while the higher end ones (Stuart's Choice?) are Gianluca Isaia suits

Yes, I just went this week. The low end line (a bit over $1000 retail) are fused with canvased lapels. Not worth the asking price, IMO.

The regular line Isaias are about $2,800 and they are wonderful.

I've become a stronger proponent of paying retail for the (a) selection and (b) in-store tailoring. I saw a friend's classic navy side-vent 2-button suit he picked up at Paul Stuart (Samuelsohn) for $1000 incl. tax and was very impressed with the fit and fabric choice.

I think that we at StyleForum sometimes over emphasize the discount % over retail, and miss the bigger picture of a wardrobe need or miscellaneous expenses such as tailoring.

I am huge fan of Century 21. It's a zoo, and can be really unpleasant to shop at, and as far as suits go it can be really hit or miss, but for your price range you can really score. I've gotten great suits there by Valentino and Hickey Freeman, with enough left over for a trip to the tailor. The Century 21 in Brooklyn actually has some great suits as well.

You may also want to check out Reiss, the English designer. There suits are nice and they have an in-house tailor at their shop on West Broadway who's fantastic.

Good luck.
