I still have the OT on Laserdisc. They're the only LDs I still have and the only reason I still keep the Laserdisc Player.

I love Star Wars, but am amazed at the devotion some take it to. I would never even occur to me to "despecialize" the movies. I think I'd rather sit around with Ataturk and grouch.

Where to download?

Google Harmy's Despecialized edition. You should find a webpage devoted to it. They should also list out which version is the latest as they have revised them on and off over the years as better source material comes about.

The people who created them are insanely devoted to it. There is a youtube video floating around that details the amount of work and manhours they put into them. I say God bless them. I didn't care for a lot of the changes Lucas made to the Special Editions but he managed to make them even worse over the years. So be thankful we have a way to download high quality versions of the films as they were originally made.

You know, when watching them in their entirety, I don't care too much about the changes...but watching one of those clips of "Worst changes in ANH Special Edition" or whatever makes it cringeworthy.

Other than the whole "Han shot first" controversy, they mostly aren't things you notice too much, but many of them are completely idiotic. I think the worst is when they are pulling into Mos Eisley in the land speeder and for no ******* reason, a giant CGI lizard creature walks across the frame right in front of the camera. For a decent chunk of time, the entire screen is consumed by the fleshy skin of this piece of mediocre CGI.

Not like there is a big ugly lizard on the screen...you can't even tell what it is because you literally only see the belly.

Wtf purpose does that edit serve? If the film were made in chicago, I would be sure that some politically connected person's mentally ill nephew really liked drawing dinosaur bellies and they gave him 5 seconds of screen time as a form of patronage.

I actually consider the worst change Lucas made was having Vader yell "Nooooooo!" when grabbing the emporer and throwing him to his death. It takes a powerful moment and makes it feel cheesy. The change was completely unnecessary and destroyed the scene.

Absolutely.

The thing is, though, that yelling "Noooooo!" is exactly the sort of thing that you can imagine the whingeing, petulant, immature Anakin Skywalker of the prequels doing. In that sense, then, Lucas's update to the ROTJ scene is consistent with his vision in the prequels - which is, of course, a bad thing as the prequels sucked massively when compared to the original trilogy.

If I recall correctly, the "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" when throwing the Emperor was not in the "original" Special Editions. I do believe that was a much later addition after the prequels.

It wasn't in the original '83 release. Another dumb change by Lucas. Ruined the best scene of the whole film for me.

I mean even in the late '90s special editions. It wasn't until the later Blu-Rays AFTER the prequels came out that they added the no.

Watching that video made me realize how much shittier and more prequely Lucas made the original trilogy in all his subsequent fumblings. I'm so happy that man has finally been stopped. Now I'm hoping Disney's insatiable greed recognizes the fact that just about everyone wants the original theatrical release on bluray and they come out with a new box set.

Watching that, I'll say I don't mind most of the digital ship enhancements. But basically everything on tatooine sucks.

The "digital ship enhancements" make them look like they came out of the cutscene of a mid-2000s video game.

Is there anything ataturk actually likes (besides ******** on things he doesn't like)?

You're thinking of why, who I'm surprised hasn't stopped by to point out that the Original Trilogy is the most overrated series of films in cinema history.

I didn't mind the digital ship enhancements either, for what they were. Fun enhancements to classic battle scenes. Thing is they should have always been optional. Same with any other change. Make them optional and there really is no reason Lucas shouldn't get a chance to "enhance" (ugh) his original films. It's when they refuse to release the original cuts in any format to purchase I have a problem. These films are part of a whole generation's childhood. Not allowing people to consume the versions they watched as children is an absolute travesty.
