New Nokia Lumia - I want

This thing is awesome. When I saw leaked photos of a yellow body I was turned off, but the finished product is sexy as hell. Can't wait for release nov 2nd. -8.7megapixel camera with f/2 carl zeiss optics and real optical image stabilization. This is the best camera on any phone (and I doubt the new iphone will beat it). It can take pictures in low light without flash thanks to its optical image stabilization (as opposed to digital, which doesn't really work). Also shoots 1080p with OIS for much less jittery video. -offline maps so you can do turn-by-turn nav without using a crapload of data (nice for travelers) or when you have no signal. you could download the entire US if you wanted to. Also has transport and indoor maps. -nice social integration, which is standard for windows phone -everything syncs to skydrive so you have instant access on other devices -wireless charging -4.5" 720p touchscreen you can use with gloves on -1.5Ghz dual-core snapdragon s4 processor, 1GB ram, 32GB internal (plus 7GB free on skydrive), LTE, NFC, and pretty much everything else expected out of a top of the line phone. -runs on windows phone 8, which still hasn't been formally launched, so a lot of features haven't been announced (including the Skype integration)

I'm a big fan of Nokia's recent smartphone designs. Nokia's really the only player that's making phones that look and feel as high quality as Apple's, but are managing to do so with a unique ascetic that stands out in the crowded market. Materials, craftsmanship and technology are top notch. From a purely hardware perspective the only thing I would like to see changed with the 920 is a slightly more manageable screen size and a reduction in the phone's thickness. That and it would be nice to see them bring back cyan as a color option. It really was looking to be Nokia's trademark color even if it never sold as well as the others.

I find myself pleased with the direction MS has taken their Windows Phone platform too. The tile based UI, with its flat appearance that embraces digital without trying to mimic physical objects is something I find myself wishing the other industry players would take note of. Having said that, I am not fully confident Microsoft has it ready for prime time yet. With Windows Phone 8 they threw out the core they built on with 7 and started from scratch. Considering they didn't let many industry professionals get much of any hands out with the phones at Nokia's press conference and were unable to announce a formal launch date or pricing shows a level of uncertainty worth taking note of.

Having said that, I would love to be proven wrong here. The industry needs competition and I would rather not see it remain largely a Google and Apple game.

I'm seriously considering this bad boy. Need to see the final unwrapping of Win8 but it looks to be a winner. I think this will be a HUGE seller in cold climates if the gloves tech really really works.

I've seen the comments about thickness but I think some perspective is in order. Yes, a galaxy s3 is 8.6mm, an iphone 4s is 9.3mm thick and the 920 is 10.7. The 920 is clearly the "*****" in that group, but it's not really fat. The 820 is 9.9mm so I think it's reasonable to assume that some of that thickness is part of the price you pay for a camera assembly that actually moves to compensate for shake. Don't know about you but I can sacrifice a mm or two for something that adds that much functionality (and this is one part of the phone that's been independently verified to work really well). And just to add one last data point, an iphone 3gs was 12.3mm but actually feels nicer in your hand than a 4s so thickness isn't everything. It would be nice if it was a bit thinner but it's not even close to being a deal breaker.

I think it will be an uphill slog for MS to get marketshare, but that they will get there, just like they did on xbox. They couldn't have hoped for a better partner than Nokia and even the new Samsung wp8 looks really nice (higher quality than the s3, but with a horrible name). Not only is nokia's hardware very good, but the extra software lumia owners are getting is fantastic compared to what most vendors put on their phones.

I'm not really worried about the "new" core. Microsoft's software development and testing practices are top-notch these days. They're not going to release buggy software. I say that as someone with experience across their whole range of products. I've been involved in testing at various levels both beta and final release versions of everything from windows server 2012, sql 2012, windows 8, the office 2013 preview, system center 2012, exchange 2013, hyper-v and their Navision ERP system. Long gone are the days when you really had to worry. I've been super impressed by the quality of things coming out of Redmond lately.

I would love to see Nokia return to making solid useable phones and the **** they have been making.

I think what makes them so similar is the rim. I was trying to move the SONY-logo to the place where it's at Nokia's phone, but then I realized I'm really just trying to find reasons to avoid keeping on studying.

As a current Lumia 900 user, here is my .02...

Windows still needs more apps. Period.
Banking apps, traveling apps, daily use apps, etc are sorely missed.
After doing my banking on iPhone/Blackberry for years, it's tough to go without.

Stability on the latest Nokia products has been questionable. There are huge outcry's in the windows mobile world revolving around poor data connectivity, low signal strength, freezing, etc.

The Carl Zeiss camera is absolute garbage on the 900. I've lost faith, but I've got my fingers crossed the new one will be better.

The aesthetics of the 900 are great, and the 920 will be similar. However, the 900 is an ergonomic nightmare... Very difficult to grip without a case.

I really hope Nokia/Windows pulls it together with the 920.

I dont have a ton of apps but that's one thing I like about having an Iphone.

So do I.

The only thing you can really compare to current gen lumia is the UI and app availability. Windows phone 7/7.5 was built on the old windows mobile technology (ie the crappy old mobile os with the start button that looked like XP). That's why they were limited to single cores, low res, and all the other hardware constraints on the last batch of phones. The only thing that's really the same in 8 is the UI. Under the hood it's been gutted for something that has a very strong lineage at its core. It also gets the network stack and some other things from "real" windows. I'm not saying there won't be any growing pains with specific chipsets or certain companies' implementations, but at its core it will be very solid and i'd expect most problems to be smoothed out fairly quickly with over the air updates that will be pushed forward by Microsoft and not the carriers.

As for apps, they will continue to come with time. I think WP8 will do much better than 7 because it looks like it will be on many more carriers this time and Nokia won't be the only partner with a so-called "hero" phone. Samsung (already announced) and HTC (it's safe to assume) both have top of the line devices slated for release soon after launch. Last release did'n't see a single wp7 phone make it to Verizon but they'll be there this time.

At this point we can only wait for the carrier announcements, official launch of wp8 and the devices but I'm optimistic.

I thought I'd never see the day I'd be anticipating a new Windows Mobile phone more than a new iPhone.

I have the 900 right now and I like it a lot. I hope the signal is better in the new one and yes, a better camera too.

How do you like the windows os?

I really like it. If you use a PC for work it's also nice because you have excel, outlook, and word integrated with the phone.

it really depends on if they can pull it all together with WP8. If the apps improve, the selection improves, and the nice additions keep coming I think they could really take some market share away from Apple.
