Not sure how much everyone here is into the whole sockless look but I think these two examples are a very stylish way to wear the above mentioned combination (especially in a warmer climate):

Cool combo. Who makes those loafers?

The shirt collar seems to make all the difference. Pulling off this look successfully means wearing a collar that stands up on its own, doesn't flop limply to the sides, and shows no undershirt when open. I know of at least some folks who, when they get their shirts made, request that the tailor place the second button a little bit lower than normal -- so as better to achieve the "Tom Ford" look when unbuttoned.

Conversely, the look on Obama and Ryan -- which is more often seen in public -- comes across as childish and sloppy. It's their attempt to adopt a so-called common touch, and appear to be men of the people. Unfortunately, they succeed too well in this aim.

For me, there are two things that make or break this look; the collar (as already mentioned) and a pocket square. A tie adds a bit of interest and depth to the suit. Without a tie the suit looks unfinished and "naked". However, the pocket square can serve the same function AND it won't look like you just don't know how to tie a tie.

But, now with the campaign in full swing, I am seeing it every where.

... Or, can this look be saved? If so, how?

What you see on the campaign trail is not a great fitting navy suit with a crisp white shirt, but a not so well fitting boxy navy suit with a white shirt and silly flag-pin on the lapel. IMHO a completely different look.

^This. As mentioned previously, how well put together the look is the harbinger of success or failure. The collar's ability to stay erect like it's just ingested viagra helps keep the look clean. The image of our political posterboys with collars flatter than pancakse and shirts so ill fitting they buttons are collapsing on the fabric between them - shuddering. Having said that, it is a very specific and very planned outfit for political candidates, it is far from sloppily thrown together.

However, as we are not political hopefuls, dress like you do well for yourself, and in this application it means a crisp collar on a well fitting shirt, a (i prefer darker, but NY street style suggests lighter, cartoonish even) blue suit with a PS of varying character pending your own, a simple watch, and an according lace up or loafer. Hell, those guidelines with almost any color suit may be a recipe for success (ALMOST any color suit...).

Guys, no one outside of SF will notice the ******* collar....

They will however notice the COLOR.

Don't wear navy that looks black is all.
