Stitchy - is that a white shirt + sport coat combo again? These are rarely, if really ever, a good idea. Stick to blue shirts, stripes and checks with sport coats and keep your white shirts for suits.

indeed it is. i asked this last time, and got no reply. is it really ok to wear a blue shirt with a SC that has so much black in it? it seems odd to me.

thanks for the other tips.

In addtion, the pattern of the tie is too close to that of the coat. Plus, that's a very forma tie that really belongs with suits, or blazers at the outside.

i thought that, same patterns, but different scale (small check SC, large check tie) was ok?

also, again, any other tie recs for this SC. manton? gdl? bueller? anyone?

very interesting. i did not look at it like that.

i was viewing it, that the SC has 3 distinct colors/lines, b/w/gray, and they are all very small lines/checks. the tie is just a big b&w (slight navy threads in the black part of the check) houndstooth check. but i can see how you would consider the scale to be similar the way you have graphed it so fancily. maybe irl it looks different. it was a very close up pic.

also, as you have it enlarged, it is blurry, thus kind of merging the lines in the SC. in actuality they are more distinctly separate, and small in scale.

Scale is how big a frame you need to get a picture of the pattern that repeats, so that there's no pattern outside the frame that isn't repeated inside the frame. "Business" is about how many lines you've got in that frame. So while the tie and SC are on the same scale, the SC is much busier that the tie. Finally, contrast is how clearly defined the lines of the pattern are. Both the tie and the SC seem to have a lot of contrast here, and that's the hardest kind of pattern matching to do.
