iPhone 5

I just hope this pushes lenovo to put a high-res display in their machines. I don't want to give up the thinkpad trackpoint and keyboard, but that retina display is really nice. It would need to be on the air before i looked at it though. The pro is too heavy. I need 3lbs or lighter.

Yes, but this is really not true anymore. Many of Apple's products are reasonably priced and well within reach of the Joe public. Just because they sell a $2200+ laptop does not mean they don't also sell a $50 iPod and a free on contract iPhone.

yeah. it's odd cuz it's viewed as luxury yet most people can afford it (and do. i swear every other phone i see in public is an iphone)

It blows my mind how often I see iPhone's being used by others every day.

I swung by the apple store after work today to check out the retina display on the MBP, and to be honest, it didn't blow me away at all at first glance. It was only after you compare it side-by-side with the regular macbook pro that you see the difference, but even then, it wasn't that amazing.

Sure you'll love it for the first couple of days of use, but unless you're constantly comparing it to a shittier screen, you'll get so used to it and it won't even matter anymore.

It blows my mind how often I see fake iPhones being used by others every day. There's two of the things in my office here. Cheap Android phones, made to look like the iPhone 4 that have the Apple logo, plus the words "iPhone" and "Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in the USA." on the back.

BTW this one that made me chuckle the other day...

...it's a knock-off Macbook Air, that has a Windows key, but it runs Android NOT Windows.

I guess my point is that the brand shouldn't be viewed as luxury. They make great products with high levels of fit and finish that are apparent in both hardware and software, but that does not equate "luxury" as one typically defines it.

I have a feeling it will be like the retina displays on the iPhone and iPad. Once you get used to it, going back to an average display will feel jarring. The screen will quickly spoil you.

EDIT: As to your last point, wouldn't that happen to most people fairly often? You would use your MacbookPro at home then have to go to work and use the ****** screens all day? I have a nice Dell IPS at home and already get annoyed using my crappy work LCDs.

well that was my point as well. it's odd because it shouldn't be viewed as luxury, yet by the public it is. the price point, the design, the mass appeal, something about it

unless you're trying to argue that apple products aren't viewed as luxury by the public, which i would disagree with

Maybe some in the public do, but I would disagree that this view is largely held. It's more of being viewed as "superior", "quality" or even "best in class." While those are often traits of "luxury" they are not exclusive to it.

Would be an interesting study to conduct to see how the company's products are viewed.

I can't say if that would be the case whenever you switch to a shittier monitor at work since I don't constantly use a device with a retina display (have an iPad 3 but I never use it), but it makes sense that would be the case.

Yeah, it also depends on one's eyesight. My father bought the iPad 3 and doesn't think they improvement is that drastic over the 2. For me, it's night and day.

I always liked the old metaphors.....Apple is the luxury sportscar - sleek, high quality, premium prices, Windows is the station wagon - You putter along crappily, but most don't seem to mind because it's easy to drive, and Linux is the tank - an unlimited supply of tanks in the dealership parking lot with the keys in the ignition for anyone to take for free, but they can't because no one knows how to drive them.

Yeh that's a good analogy. Around here only a select affluent few can afford those Apple luxury sports cars, the real ones that is. Think I'm probably the only one who sort of knows how to drive a Linux tank, but I drive a Windows station wagon most of the time for work and pleasure.
